Today just below Watts Barr dam today. I was using an ultralight rig with 6 pound test and a small gold spoon. On the 4th cast caught this striper. The battle lasted an hour and we ended up drifting about 1 mile down river before we had our first chance to net him. Thought for sure the line was going to break because I had as much pressure on him as I dared. Caught three small cats but still no skipjack. Didnt weigh it because wanted to get it back in the water as soon as possible. Any guess as to what it weighed?

Awesome man, my grandpa caught one about that size on Cherokee on a 5 1/2 foot rod but he had 8 pound test so you have one upped him.

Thanks, couldn't of landed this fish without being in our boat which also has a remote controlled Ulterra trolling motor. I was able to wear the remote around my neck and chase the fish and move the boat to a better location.

I have caught a lot of them over the years and that one is every bit of 25 lbs if not a little more. Giant belly from gorging on shad up by the dam.

Quite a catch on tackle that light! Congratulations!

#25 +/-

Caught / netted / electro-fished enough of them to know. Great fish.

However, I would like to see pics of the boat. Looks like something I might like (I'm upgrading this year).

Thanks-

Judd

Boat is a 2015 Alumacraft T-195, Yamaha 200, Ulterra w/Ilink 112, Helix 10SI w/GPS. Owned plenty of boats in my life and this might be my favorite one for fresh water. 200 might be overkill but it runs good. Will hit 50 mph at 5,500 rpm with 4 batteries, 2 adults, full fuel tank, and lots of fishing gear. Couldnt find what I wanted around here so drove to Minnesota and hauled it back.

But back to the skipjacks.....I just cant seem to catch any. How do you guys catch them below the dams? Do they favor the rocks on the side?

Do not know where you are around Knoxville, but I can't keep them off my line in the Holston and French Broad.

Put in at FOR.

Go 3 miles upstream on Holston to 40.

Go 6 miles up on FB to 7 islands.

Or fish with me.
