Usually I don't do this until late in the summer, but the drought is already on. With temperatures in the triple digits, now is a good time for water sets. The best place is where there's only a small amount of water left, thus concentrating deer.
I usually just wade out a few feet and shove an old board into the mud. Then, duct tape a perpendicular piece of wood on it making a cross. Just wrap the trail camera strap or cable around the cross to mount. The reason I don't screw in or nail the second piece of wood is that the water depth may change from set to set, and I want to be able to adjust height.
Another good time for water sets is during the rut when all the chasing makes the deer thirsty. Have fun!
