Opening morning in Ky was this past Saturday. Walking through the field at 5 am and birds were already gobbling. I guess because it was a full moon and so bright. I set up on a ridge where i have seen them pitch down and then go off my property to another guy. Sure enough that didn't happen. After fly down i had one responding to my call almost all morning but he was with a hen and across another property. We played the stand off calling for a while but i guess it didn't make her mad enough to come investigate. At 9 or so it sounded like he was coming back to my property but further East then where he roosted. At 9:30 i decided to go that direction. I walked into one of my fields and was standing in some thick CRP in case something was ahead of me in the field. I kept hearing rustling to my left on the ridge so decided to hit my slate. 2 hammered where i heard the rustling. They were about 50 yards in or so. I belly crawled through the thick stuff and sat in the edge of it. I hit my slate again and they rang my ears they were so close. They stepped into the wood line and i missed at 10 freaking steps. Ticks me off!!!

Finally got to where I just call it catch and release turkey hunting...somehow that doesn't sound quite as bad as "missed."

That is tuff, missing one but down thru my years of turkey hunting I have probably missed ten or more!
It still just kills me to miss but it happens to everyone who has turkey hunted a long time! ;)

Don't feel bad, I missed one Easter morning at 15 yds. I made a rookie mistake and didn't get him to stop and crane his neck up and instead over confidently shot at him while he was feeding from my left to right and he moved his neck just as I was about to shoot and I tried to adjust and shoot at the same time and missed. I was so mad. It happens though.

I missed #14 Saturday. I just rushed it before he got out of my narrow shooting lane. It absolutely eats at me for a few days. All have been under 20 yards which I'm glad cause I bet most misses at 30+ yards aren't complete misses.

My nerves got the best of me. #1. This is just my 2nd year turkey hunting and first real worked bird by myself. #2 I just got to excited and felt myself pull to the right when i shot.

45 yrs old and have killed a lot of Gobblers. Saturday, after a long fought battle with another one of my nemesis, I finally got him to break and come look, only to also "miss" at 33 steps  Ended up coming high left. Did not catch him till he jumped up on a log at my 9:30 position :) . Gun was in ready position on my knee, pointed at 12:00, which is where I figured him to come. Stood there scanning for at least a minute, then stepped down and started down to me. Open between me and him with a few small saplings. Nothing big enough for me to reposition on him. Figured I'd let him come as close as he was willing to, giving me time to spin quick on him and be able to get on his neck when he seen the movement and started to run. At 33 steps he stopped and got nervous. Made my move. He ran straight away back up through saplings. Instead of just letting him run off, I tried to thread a shot through a small opening, like an unethical idiot  He scooted right through up, over, and gone. Never heard him fly. Did a complete 2hr grid search and nothing. Even went as far as to go to the house and carry one of my cur dogs back to look for another hour and a half. Nothing. Like you, I keep track of every one. This was #11. :) Went back in there yesterday to listen to see if he was alive. Although it is impossible to be 100% sure, I did hear a turkey gobble twice on the limb at daylight, just above and in the direction he went the day before.(300yrds), along with another turkey that had also been gobbling on a high peak across from him on that same day. He was in the same spot. Told the good Lord that if I heard mine gobble I would respectfully back out and leave him alone. Backed out and left both of them to go hunt another spot. Came in from a different ridge this morning to hunt the one that was up top. He, along with what I believe was the one I shot at, started gobbling on the limb at 6:50. Pulled another idiot move trying to get to tight and bumped a roosted hen that was with him. Game over. Like you said, very few are actually "missed", especially beyond 30 yrds. Bottom line is I should have let him run off and never shot.

Cow everyone that chases them a lot will experience that scenario and do the same thing even when they know better. I shouldn't have shot Saturday. Bird wasn't even getting spooky. I should have let him walk off and repositioned but hindsight is 20/20. Any man that misses as much as me is more than welcomed in my camp lol

10 yds is the toughest shot everrrrrr on a turkey in my opinion. I would much rather have one at 45-50 than I would at 10. It happens bud

That close there's no shame your pattern is about the size of your fist if not smaller depending on your loadout. I've killed him super close but I shoot a fairly open pattern and a fast fire. I hate the close combat ones

I'd be switching to a modified choke if I were you!

Your not a idiot, as said above there's no shame in missing at 10 yards. I've missed my share at close range. Look at it this way, you won the game, he just didn't get a ride in your truck. But, he'll be there to play the game with again another day.

Modern turkey chokes save many a turkey every year.
No doubt about that. Been texting a buddy today in Missouri that has missed 3 in a row with his new super duper tight turkey choke. He mainly hunts woods and mountains, so no long pokes. I told him last night to go back to his old gun, with a flush full choke and redeem himself. He texted me at 8AM this morning, he had killed one at 30 steps. Easy enough.

The closer they get, the lower I aim.
For sure, I've been known to aim right above the beard if he is 20 and under.
