Haven't hunted much to this point (work load has been heavy), but was able to get out this morning to a private property that I know has at least one gobbler. Got there with the intention of setting up ina specific spot (smaller property). When I arrived, he was gobbling on the roost inthat spot so I had to set up in a less than ideal spot. He goes silent, so I know he is onthe ground. I call hoping to get a vocal response...nothing. I hate my set up so after 15-20 minutes I decide instead of calling again I will move to a better setup...of course you know what happens next...bumped him. Not bad but enough that I have doubts he will come back to this spot for a couple hours. I'm set up now, calling and hoping...and kicking myself.

It sucks and happens. If I get the desire to move a lot of times I'll set a time say 10 minutes before I'll move.any times the bird has gobbled or shown up in that period

Well, after bumping him I settled into a spot, called every 15-20 minutes and waited. He gobbled 2-3 times in front of me toward the right. I kept up the 15-20 minute rhythm and was patient. After 40-60 minutes he gobbled again 2-3 times, in front and toward the left. He was closer this time. I held tight...he gobbled some more directly to my left...then he went into a gobbling fit, but I could tell he had slipped into the grass valley below the ridge I was on. I moved to the edge of the ridge and called...he gobbled all the more. I could see through the trees the grassy hillside on the opposite ridge...there he was strutting and hollering out in the open. I worked my way around to try and get closer but by the time I got there he had moved on. At that point I had to get to work.

This morning is what I call beautiful frustration. He basically worked around me to get where he wanted to go just out of sight. My calling was insufficient...but I enjoyed the game.

It wasn't your calling most likely, it was a turkey being a turkey, sometimes they just stand their ground. About impatience and bumping him, I have done that a few times and it will teach you for sure!

That is the sport of turkey hunting in a nutshell.

When he stands out there and DEMANDS that the hen show herself, it can get very unnerving and frustrating. Your calling was fine, he was just playing by the script of the hen going to him. Stay with him. He'll break!

I doubt your calling was the problem. Unless there was just too much of it. Sometimes you gotta give him the silent treatment and make him hunt you. But that said, it sounds like he was hunting you. Just not comfortable being where you were. Who knows. My best guess is he was a turkey doing turkey things. Most times they don't even know what they are going to do.

Between your calling, impatience, and your inability to leave your phone in the truck, I'd say he's been well educated and pretty safe. Prove me wrong by waiting a day then going back and setting up at first light where you seen him in the grass opening. Just cluck to 'em and scratch leaves. Leave the phone in the truck and be ready for him to sneak in on you. Like most these days, I bet you can't leave your phone in the truck and end up "bumping" him again :)

Is this guy serious or joking?

Exactly, impatience has saved many a birds life. I do the same thing now. If I get the desire to move, I try to force myself to stay put another 15 minutes. It has certainly worked to my benefit more than once.
