I'm setting up a Mossberg 935 with the Indian Creek .675 Black Diamond Strike choke tube.

For those who have used this combination,
have you obtained more uniform patterns with #6 or #5 size shot?
(For some reason, most of my turkey guns have overall "patterned" better with #5's, i.e. more uniform and almost as dense.)

Best loads?
Any other little jewels of info you could share?

I use Winchester HV #6 and they seem to pattern better out of my gun but you never know how they will shoot out of your gun. I would compare #5's and #6's loads with that choke if I were you. Great choke in my book.

The shot size you intend on shooting generally dictates choke size. The choke size here has already been selected, so I am making suggestions on that level.

Not to undo your thoughts on your friends selection, but I`d never opt for a .690" in an 835 unless shooting large lead pellets #4`s or large Hevi Shot loads such as #4 or #5.

I have had 5 scoped turkey guns under my roof all at once, and I own 54 turkey chokes for all bore sizes, makes and models. I`m not a guru, but have paid my dues at the pattern board so I can help answer a few questions when they arise.

I know you can run tighter chokes with Nitros, because I have done it. I didn`t hear it, I have done it. I made the investment in the chokes so I would not have to guess.

I know its great to have a knowledgeable friend to help out, and I hope you dust your first bird soon. I sold my 835, but the most effective choke I shot wqas a .680" Comp-N-Choke. I shoot #6.

I`m really proud it worked out. If the stars line up jus rite, I may get to see that beast in action..... :)

Mrs CC says I`m GTG called Blake yesterday. What a fix for cabin fever!!!!

Wes, I`d be all about the new load from Hevi Shot and get hold of some of the #7`s. I help run a sporting goods store in Memphis and have these on the shelf.

Probably will.
Sure wish Winchester would make their "hevi" version in a straight 7.

I have an 835 with the same choke and I shot some of the nitro straight 7s and it was awesome. I believe it was the 2 7/16oz load.
OUCH! 2 7/16 oz load!!! Bet shooting that is like being kicked by a mule!

Federal also has a #7 with Flite Control . . . .
From what I understand, those should not be used with a ported tube?

I have a "favorite" turkey gun that is actually a side-by-side with 2 3/4" chambers ---- does anyone offer straight #7's in a 2 3/4" shell? I'd like to try the 7's in my old "favorite".

The Hevi Blended load is #5, #6, #7 but no idee how much of each is in there. Those are 1200 fps where the #7 is 1090. I would bet the blended would work for you too.

And a 2 1/4 oz payload, bet I'd need surgery to repair my shoulder!

I've yet to fire a load with more than 2 oz, but seeing (or should say "feeling") how much more recoil 2 oz has over 1 3/4 oz, it must be substantially more.

I have some Fiocchi 2 1/4 oz nickel plated #6's that I'll probably test in the Indian Creek .675. Thinking they're coming at a tad over 1200 fps.

Thse are also offered in a 3" version with 2 0z payload. This would also enhance the tight choke as the lighter payload is better with tighter.
. . . . . the lighter payload is better with tighter.

Thanks, Tim.
That's one of those "little jewels" of info.

When you say "better", do you mean in terms of more pattern uniformity with comparable density (to heavier payloads)?

Yes.

When you are borderline to tight the lower payload will pattern better, more uniform.

I have Federal #7, Hevi #7, and Winchester XTended #5 for the 20 ga.

I`d shoot the #7 Hevi with that choke.

The .555" is the smallest constriction I have seen offered by any choke maker for the 20 ga.

I have some .560" on special order from Rhino. The owners where I work hunt with 20 ga. They have challenged me to load our turkey ammo for this spring so I have much components also on hand. I missed ordering the buffering, so I cannot commence till it arrives. This will at least be a blast.
