Is this a jake?

Looks like it to me based on the wide ness of his breast, and no big beard, but hard to be 100% from that angle and without being able to see tail and wing feathers.

A hen hatched a poult last year somewhere, but depending on how big "your place" is may or may not be from there. They will travel many miles. He could be their next spring as along beard and very well could be 10 miles from there. You just never know.

The hen also looks like a first year hen, her wing covert feathers look to be in an irregular shape or staggered in length, usually meaning that they are juvenile. Hard to tell for certain though.

woodsman is right on both counts. Also the head of the male bird doesn't sport a large enough white cap to be a mature gobbler.

agreed, that is a jake.

where he was hatched is another matter. More than likely he was born on a farm a mile or two away. The jakes probably roam more than any of the other birds in the spring... they are just looking to find a property where they won't get their butts kicked.

Looks real jakey to me. Scrawny bird with a small head and what appears to be a short beard
