Does this look like a armadillo to ya'll?
Just wait, you will be seeing a lot more on camera. Prior to 2006, we had none. Now I get a dozen on trail-camera every time I pull the cards. Invasive little boogers. This is in Riddleton, just outside of Carthage. I've seen them run over on Hwy 25 right there at the farm, just hadn't see any in the wild.
Any idea why they have moved into the state? What has caused it?Yup. First showed up in Middle TN around 2006.
Sooner than that. I remember catching one by hand in New Johnsonville around 2001. We were working on a right a-way there. I asked a TWRA agent about it and he speculated they were following the fire ants, but said that was purely his opinion.Yup. First showed up in Middle TN around 2006.
That's what I have always heard too.Sooner than that. I remember catching one by hand in New Johnsonville around 2001. We were working on a right a-way there. I asked a TWRA agent about it and he speculated they were following the fire ants, but said that was purely his opinion.
I also heard the "following the fire ants" idea, but armadillos have far outstripped the range of fire ants. Armadillos are now up into central KY. The most likely scenario is they are expanding their range while they can. They cannot withstand extremely cold weather, and the shift towards warmer winters we've had of late is allowing them to expand northward.Any idea why they have moved into the state? What has caused it?
As I travelled a lot at the time, I followed their progress northward out of AL and northwestward out of the Memphis area by looking at those killed on I-65 and I-40 respectively. I finally got my first one on trail-camera on the western edge of Middle TN in 2006. Although I'm sure some outliers existed earlier.Sooner than that. Fire ants are the spawn of Satan. I hope you never do either, they are terrible little creaturesThat's what I have always heard too.
We have them where I live now but I have yet to find a fire ant hill.
Hope I never do too.
