I bought a Remington SPS870 pump/not semi-auto. I was given a box of ammo with and told it was sighted. I have a pretty good group at 20 yards. Go back to 40 and the pattern is horrible. Back to 25 and it tightens up. The shells came in a case, all I know is they are Remington #5's. I was thinking LongBeard Xr 4 and possible an aftermarket choke would help. Anybody have the gun and have recommendations. Last year I shot a Mossberg 835 of my Uncle's. That gun was easy to sight in, and held a good pattern so I expected today's sight it to be a breeze and now I'm scrambling.

I would definitely start with an aftermarket choke. Just about any decent turkey choke will pattern pretty good with the longbeard xr shells. I would go with #5 or #6 size shot instead of the 4s though.

I have an 11-87 that came with a rem turkey choke and it measured 680. Didn't pattern for squat even with longbeards. I put a primos tightwad and 3" #6 longbeards in it and now it's stupid tight and needs to be scoped.

Look for a choke in the 665-655 range.

For starters throw those Remington shells in the trash! Get a jelly head and some long beard 5s or 6s and you should have no issues. I'd go magblends over the longbeards but they are more expensive.

What he said. Use the Remingtons to squirrel hunt or something.

There's a kicks gobbling thunder in the classifieds that would do nicely.

I have replied to him. But I'm new to chokes and and he isn't sure if it would work. I did buy some Winchester double x turkey a few minutes ago. That is the only thing available in town for me. Hopefully they will tighten it up some. I have procrastinated with getting setup for turkey season and it has cost me. Won't happen again.

kicks is a FANTASTIC lead choke for sure, it should shoot much better then what you are using now. and seriously for the love of god never use Remington turkey shells hahah. wish you were closer I have a box of Long Beards I could just give you.

x Many

One more thing, if you're not using an optical sight, consider the merits of NOT having TOO tight a choke.
Lots of birds get missed at close range, easy shots, when the gun patterns more like a rifle, but still has shotgun sights.

As an alternative to TSS #9,
if you can find them, just get some straight #7 Hevi turkey loads, which might give you your best patterns (and range) with the choke you already have. Otherwise, the Mag Blends (5, 6, & 7's blended) would be a good choice that's likely available and not as expensive as the TSS.

The gobblin thunder in the classifieds will work in your gun. It says that it's for the Remchoke threads which would be your gun. That is a pretty good deal and a good choke. As others have said, get rid of the factory choke and Remington shells. The Winchesters you got will be better with a different choke. I'd still shoot something else long term like the Longbeard XRs or Magblends.

I just paypaled him so we will see how Winchester #5 double x and that choke perform. Like I said the Remington's were given to me.

My Remingtons 12 ga have always done well with the extended Remington extra full and the Winchester High Velocity #5 (black shells).

Same thing as mine. My old 11-87 with the Remington brand super full or extra full, whatever it says, patterns as good as anything else I've had.

If they are the nitro turkey shells then that would explain it lol. Never had any luck with them. But a aftermarket choke and some longbeards will be the ticket. Been shooting them since they came out couple years ago and love them.

I know I am in the minority but my patterns with longbeard XR's are garbage with a Jellyhead. Come to think of it Ive never had a good pattern with the Longbeard XR?

The magblends pattern was at least 3 times better..
