Till It Finally Goes Right!
Been tough hunting so far. Seen lots of toms just hadn't been able to seal the deal. They have finally decided to break up a bit and Friday I had one on the line. He gobbled all over the roost. I finally decided on a set up. I'm usually too passive and scared to move, but decided I would move toward the bird. He was answering my calls, so I moved 50 yrds closer. He kept gobbling, so I moved another 50 yrds closer. After a couple of minutes he gobbled 75 yards behind me , right where I started. I was scared to move, but after a few more minutes he sounded like he had moved a little farther away, so I would move to him. As I got to a little hump in the hill I saw a bird at 50 yrds. I hit the ground and hoped it didn't see me. A few soft yelps and I saw the top full fan at the edge of the hill. He was looking...so a few purrs brought his head over the rise.
After the shot is when things went crazy. As I got to him to stop his floppin, I had my weight on my back foot as I stepped on the neck with my other. I reached down for the head and he spun around and hooked my leg with his wing...I though I was going to do a backflip. He put me on my back in the middle of the field. So YES, a 20 pound turkey CAN take down a 180 pound man!!!
20 lbs. 11 inch beard. 1 inch spurs.
