In the past I have rarely heard a turkey gobble after 2 p.m. I typically hunt until around 2 and then go fishing, because I rarely if ever hear or see anything. I have spent the late afternoon hours (4-6 p.m) each day this week walking around in the woods. Each day I have seen groups of toms with 8-12 hens. On each occasion I've got within about 150 yards and just set down to listen. Yesterday from 5:45 until they went to roost it was constant music between hens and the toms. I've never heard tom's gobble this much in the late afternoon, but it has me reconsidering my strategy.

Usually around 4pm till sunset is a good time to listen for toms firing up again. I've heard em gobble when they were with hens and I've killed one gobbling looking for a hen to roost with. I also could have killed one a few years ago that was doing the same thing but I made a rookie mistake and called to a bird that was coming in strutting.
