I've been shooting a .660 jellyhead for several years. I also have a .665 but I've never shot it. I was going to test them side by side this year but since Hevishot has gone through the roof I'm second guessing. Anybody done this test? Which was better? Is there much difference? I'm shooting a REM 870SM, 24" bbl, and 3.5 Hevi straight 6's.

The 665 should shoot 6's better by theory but never know till you shoot it.
How you figure REN? Reason I ask is my advice would have been just the opposite. I always use the Kick's GT Thunder choke guidelines as a rule of thumb and then field test to confirm or refute their recommendation. Here is their "starting point" guidelines for choke selection if you will. http://www.kicks-ind.com/mm5/merchant.m ... linThunder

x2. This is the best advice simply because every setup is different, even if it is built from the exact same components as another identical setup (gun manufacturer, bbl length, choke, shells, shot size, etc). You have to shoot your setup to know for sure.

I've always been told the bigger the shot the larger the choke diam by rule. May not be accurate just what I've always been told. It's obviously not the RULE as every choke is different and exit diam is not always the while story.

Yes I have tested both, and without a doubt out of the gun I tested the .660 was better. I tested #5 and #6 federal strut shok and winchester #5 and #6's, also hevi #6, #7, and mag blend. Gun I tested had 24" polished barrel. Best lead load number was 3-17/8-6 fed. strut shok, 141 in a 10" @ 40. Hevi #6 was 178 in the 10" with a nice even 20" pattern. Can't remember the mag blend or hevi #7 numbers without digging for them right now, but they were up around 200. These are all 3" shell numbers. If I remember right the best the .665 shot with lead #6 was around 105 to 110 and 152 with #6 hevi. Hope this helps, but who knows. Only way you would truly know would be to test both in your gun. What kind of numbers are you getting with yours? I got better numbers with the 3" lead than the 3.5". All I ever tested was 3" hevi in mine, never tried the 3.5".

I have both (.660 and .665) in the jelly head as well. In my 23" SM870 using Magblend the .660 was/is much better. I bet using the #6 you'll find the .660 in that barrel length will out preform the .665.
Good luck!!

Good point REN, but you know how it is. Got a different choke laying around and wonder if it will do better. I will probably stick with the .660 and put the .665 in my son's 870 (26" bbl).

Ha! Nothing wrong with that man! Maybe I should have tried the 3.5" in mine. Oh well too late, sold that gun, now I'm working on two others.
