Helloall ,I am from liberty ky . I hunt public in south central ky with my bow. This year I filed my buck and doe tag early in Ky. I have a friend who lives in Winchester Tenn. I bit the bullet and bought the yearly nonresident licences and hunted public with a gun down in his neck of of the woods for 4 days at the start of your all's rifle season. I had a ton of fun , some super close calls on nice bucks, passed some dinks ,and missed a doe ,but no tags filled. I hunted the public on tims ford lake and public up in the mountain right on the Alabama border . I have wanted to get back down again and try to fill some of my pricy tags.
It looks like I am going to get a couple days the week after Christmas. I know the weather isn't the greatest, but I'm gonna try! I am planning on hunting yanahali WMA as it is closer to ky than were I hunted in Winchester. My question to you all is this: would I be better off to use my Jon boat or a canoe to access the duck river where it flows through the WMA? My jhon boat is a tracker topper with a 8 horse 4 stroke Yamaha.im just curious if I can use the moter most of the time or if it's shallow enough that my canoe would be a better option. I appreciate all advice in advance. Jonah

Water is usually higher than usual this time of year. Canoe you won't be able to paddle upstream, even a trolling motor might be a struggle. A Jon boat with an outboard might work, but the shoals are still really shallow unless the river really gets up and flowing. You're better off walking in, there is road access everywhere. Hunting pressure will be dying off, but you still may have to burn a day or two to find a good spot, as the deer have been hunted really hard since muzzleloader season. Also don't overlook other public areas that are even closer to KY. The deer population is healthy across the whole middle of the state. Good luck

Thanks for replying cayman! I have really enjoyed watching you videos and have learned a lot from you! Thanks for the advice! Have you ever hunted old hickory WMA?

I don't like to talk about specific areas I've hunted on the internet (learned that the hard way) but I've hunted a whole lot of places in middle TN and add to that list every year. There's deer just about everywhere.

The duck is not to be trifled with especially in winter. You should have plenty of water for the jon boat in the winter without having to worry about hitting a shoal but I would not be trying to learn that river in the dark.

Yeah I forgot to mention trees and random limestone boulders

The Duck was running high last weekend where Hwy 13 crosses it South of Waverly.
It was still within its banks, but extremely swift..

After those last storms I'm sure there's submerged logs and blow downs everywhere..

Be careful out there!
Take extra gear Incase you break down.👍

Totally understand catman! I decided to hunt old hickory as it is quite a bit closer than yanahali.we will see how that goes! Are you planning on trying to fill any more of your Ky tags before season ends?
