It's been a great weekend in the turkey woods with my 10 year old son. I posted yesterday where he killed a nice gobbler with plans this morning to go after some more that we saw yesterday. Well, this morning found us set up about a hundred yards from where three were roosted yesterday morning and came in silent without a shot. They weren't home this morning and never made a peep ever where they were roosted. We sat as long as we could stand it and headed out to try to strike another before church. We finally got on another group of 2 or 3, but they had hens that we couldn't do anything with. All the while, there was another a long ways off across the hollow begging to die. By the time we called it quits on the ones we were after, this one had moved off too far in terms of taking more time than we had to make it to church on time. We decided to chase him another day.

We decided to go back this afternoon after church. We got a bird to gobble in the same spot that he killed yesterday about 2. We got set up on them figuring it was the three left from yesterday. They answered us instantly but had several hens with them today. The hens were very vocal as we went back and forth with the gobblers giving a couple courtesy gobbles ever now and then. They finally hushed as they were going the opposite direction, and we made a move on them. We got them fired up again but would still not leave the hens or come close enough for a look. We made a very aggressive move this time and lucky we didn't get busted as we snuck up over a rise. They were just over another rise. We sat down and instantly went back and forth with the hens. We could then hear the gobblers spitting, drumming, and walking in the leaves. I finally saw a tail fan just over the rise about 40 yards, but he wouldn't make the extra five yards that we needed to see him well. The hens kept going crazy as I mocked ever sound they made. I could see the glimpse of a couple more gobblers, but they all turned and went back towards the hens. I told him that we were either about to kill one or bust one as we made a move to the rise that they were just over. We set down as we could nearly see over it. I called again and nothing. I thought that they hens had gone on up the ridge and that the gobblers would soon follow. I eased up for us to get a little closer and just about messed up. There was a strutter at 30 yards coming over the hill that only I could see. He spun back the other direction as I quickly sat back down. I was pretty sure that we were busted. I called again and nothing. I told him to ease up and look over the rise. I thought only the gobblers were there and was about to get out of there after the hens. He eased up, peeked over the rise, and turkeys went everywhere. I had no idea the hens were there too as the last time they had made a sound was going away from us. I yelled don't shoot a hen as he was a little in front of me. He took aim, fired, and here comes a turkey rolling over the hill. I was stunned in disbelief to be honest and very proud to see him keep his composure and make a very good, off handed shot. I confirmed with him that he had identified a beard before shooting as we walked upon it. The shot was a little farther than I would like for him to take at around 50 yards or so, but the TSS did the trick. He was so excited again and let out another loud "Wahoo, and Yes!".

That's what it's all about in the turkey woods. I did tell him though that Dad gets to shoot first next weekend if we get a chance. I like to pull the trigger ever now and again but seeing his excitement is what really gets me fired up.

870 Youth, hand rolled TSS#9
50+ yard shot
17 lbs 2 oz
1 1/8" spur, 3/4" spur (must have broke this one and started growing it back maybe)
9.5" beard

Oh, he's definitely been talking some smack. I told him that's okay that he could go on his on this weekend. He hushed after that. I love it though.

The turkeys better look out as he gets older is all that I can say. I know that he's my son and bias, but I've never seen a 10 year old well beyond his years on how to handle a gun in the deer and turkey woods.
