Me and my buddy are looking at going on a rio hunt next year. We like the idea of going to this place in Kansas because the guy has land in Nebraska and for a little more money after you tag out on rio's, he will drive you to Nebraska to hunt Merriams.

Has anyone on here hunted turkeys in Kansas before?

Thanks

Hunted in central Kansas spring before last. The weather was really bad, 17 degrees with a 30 mph wind the first morning. My dad and I managed to take 3 birds between both of us. I would go back, but probably hunt another area of the state.

From what I can gather, the only part of Nebraska that has true Merriams is in the northwest corner of the state. Everywhere else has hybrids, but either way they're still turkeys and you might as well hit two states if given the opportunity.

I've hunted Kansas the last 2 yrs and been able to Tag both my birds. Great state to hunt. The first yr I hunted both Nebraska and Kansas in the same trip. Hunted all public land and killed my 3 Merriams and Kansas rio.

Hunted central Kansas year before last and my dad hunted with the same outfit this year again. 4 of us got 8 birds in 3 days. Dad and his buddy killed 3 in 2 days. The weather was horrible for them. They left on day 2 because his buddy was ready to go and was willing to leave with only 1 bird. We went with Jim Gourley at Setterdogs.com. He put in lots of work for us and is a stand up guy. Will definately go back when I have the extra cash to swing it.

Kansas & Neb are a blast to hunt every time I've hunted them those birds are probably the easiest birds to hunt (IMO) like Ruger said you will probably be hunting hybrids in Neb but hey its a turkey. Best true Merriam hunt I went on was in the South Dakota Blackhills. Beautiful country & TONS of birds!!!

NW Nebraska is about ur only chance at a pure Merriam but hybrids do exist outside that range and some look like pure merriams.

I might hunt KS this spring, not sure yet.

Thank you for the info fellas. we ended up booking a hunt in Texas for rio's. I did not really want to freeze to death in Kansas. Hopefully knock the rio tag out this year and maybe head to South Dakota next year.
