To make a long story short, yesterday at 4:25 I got a bird to gobble. I seen him one strutting at 75 yard below me on the Mountain side. I crawled on my hands and Knees to peak over the side to see 10 birds feeding. I seen one and only one bird strut just for a second and go back out of strut, they were 60 yards.
At 6:45 I gave a few clucks and moved some leaves around and every bird started feeding my way, the main group got with in 15 yards, I was in hyped up panic mode. I COULD NOT FIND A BEARD on any of them! I had before, I lost the gobbler, I lost the bird in the feeding madness!
Then out of the right came a bird with a beard! With in 25 yards, SO BOOM! I shot and killed it on the spot. WHen I walked up to it I was scared! Looked like a hen. I turned it over and seen a 5" beard! I thought a jake? Then i looked and it did NOT HAVE any spurs? Slick as a ribbon. I took the tail fan and I didn't have the jagged tail fan. It had a small tail fan.
When we cleaned it I couldn't find its male parts? Of course I really had not paid attention on gobblers where the male part was. I looked between the breast bone and butt, and no male parts. So I guess it was confirmed. It was a bearded hen.
Pics coming soon.
