We haven't had a good discussion in a few days. So I'll start a good one especially a good thread for those just starting to hunt. What are the biggest mistakes people make while turkey hunting. Ill start I would say over calling and setup are two big ones.

Knowing how/where to set up. Especially on a gobbling bird that may be coming to you. I think it was Tom Kelly that said "if you sit down wrong, you're beat."

Lack of patience..... Sometimes they come running sometimes they don't... Some days they don't gobble, that doesn't mean they aren't around..

^^^^This!!! Really that's the number one

Others are calling too much, too loud, poor set ups, and not understanding the situation with the bird you're working (hens etc)

On my lease we have several turkey hunters. Most hardly ever succeed. Me and couple other guys have pretty good success. The main problem I see is the other guys sit there and call and the turkeys rarely come because they are with hens by the time our season opens. My philosophy is kill em or run em off. It's not for everyone but it works for me.

I'm glad I'm not on a lease with you.. My philosophy is just the opposite whether I'm on private land or public land... If I can't kill him I'm gonna do my best not to scare him. We'll play another day.

What he said. Been guilty of that more than once but hunting a 40 acre tract the last 10 years helped with that. You can't move when you don't have the room.

I don't bother there areas. I can't tell how many times I've killed a bird that wouldn't come and made an aggressive move to get 30 yards closer and call once and he run to me. Like I said not for everybody.

Aggressive moves are part of hunting as long as they are calculated... But I heard guys say thousands of times, well he shut up so I just walked up to see where he was at and he flew off.... :bash:

Rushing a set up has cost me birds. Fire off a call before getting set up and bird is too close to move. Get sat down before you call.

"So he cocked both his pistols, spit in the dirt, and walked out in to the street."
