The bird we set up on this morning was roosted 150 yards across a field from where he had been all week. Yesterday he flew down into the field and i knew it was going to be tough because we were actually after a different bird when this one started gobbling and we were in a creek bottom and he was roosted high up on the hill. He flew 1/2 way to us off the roost but wouldn't come the rest of the way down the hill. Instead he turned and went over the hill. As we were about to make a move he started getting closer again and he actually topped the hill and started sprinting to us. He stopped 1/2 way to strut then went behind a little rise. All of a sudden a hen popped up at about 3 yds. I thought he would follow her but he didn't. He went back over the hill, gobbling like crazy. We got within 80 yds but he went into the woods on the other side of the hill and crossed onto other property and walked away gobbling.
This morning i passed a kidney stone about 2:30 and accidentally turned my alarm off when it sounded at 4:05. My buddy called at 5 and asked if we were still going. I threw everything together and rushed out the door. He was gobbling but not much then shut up. Could hear him spitting and drumming just over the hill for a while. Another bird was super hot so we moved. Called that bird across 2 fences and a road but he would not cross a big ditch or knew somewhere else he wanted to be. He headed up a ditch gobbling constantly. We went to try to get around him and we had to cover 300 yds and climb a huge hill. 9/10 up the hill we see this bird with several jakes and hens. A little coaxing was all it took.
