Interested in hearing other's who have tried something as a last resort that ended up working in drawing a bird into range.

I have had a few such occasions, such as one a few years ago where, for the heck of it since nothing else had elicited a gobble, I reached deep down in my bag and pulled out a cheap production slate and ran a four note yelp. A gobbler responded with his only gobble that evening and a kill was made a few minutes later. He is one of my oldest birds.

Then last year, I watched a bird pester his hens in a field for over an hour. I had tried everything. He never even acted like he had heard me. I even tried calling the hens, but they ignored me also.

After a bit, he chased one of the hens a little to my left, and on a whim, I flipped the Woodhaven mouth call over in my mouth and tried the other side. It sounded more like a young hen I guess, but the hen that was being chased worked that way to investigate, and he followed, giving me the kill shot.

Let's hear yours!

private land ONLY, i worked on a bird for three hours in a big field, finally put the decoy in one hand and the gun in the other, belly crawld to with in 25yards with the decoy held out infront of me, laid down the decoy pulled up the gun as his fan was turned toward me, when he spun around it was over.

Stretch and I were setting a decoy up and we were running a little late.
Two longbeards came into the field and were staring at us.
We just stayed as low as possible and finished setting it up then belly crawled out of the field.
They were looking and gobbling the whole time then started moving away.
Long story short about an hour or so later we killed them both. :D
Not really a last ditch effort, other than using some live jakes as decoys and stretch changing calls but it was an amazing hunt anyway.

I had been calling to these birds hitting this hill in a field every evening! All 4 of them would just stay up there all fanned out and struting. After day 2 I decided to go up on that hill early and set my B-Mobile (Sugar britches) out where they were coming up as well as a hen decoy and waited.
About an hour before dark they crossed the creek below and when they saw him up on their hill it was like he called their Momma a bad name cause they hauled but up that hill and I killed within 8 yards as they were spitting and fussing all the way to old sugar!

Never made the first call!!

Back when I was in high school I was a very fast sprinter. One evening I had worked a bird quite a while and couldnt get him any closer than 75 yards. He ended up going down in a old roadbed that was basically a 5 foot deep steep ditch. I took off running, he didnt know til I was right on top of him. He tried to run out the other end of this steep ditch but I just shot him running lol

Sounds like fair chase to me! :D that would be fun to run up on one like a cat and actually get a shot and kill it.

I had a similar instance like that smstone.

I was on a farm in Williamson County. I had been working a bird for over 2 hours and couldnt get within 100 yards of him. He kept moving from one field to the other....there was a creek in between the 2 fields. Well, there had been a huge thunderstorm the night before and the creek was like white-water rushing down through there. I gave up calling the bird b/c he didnt like what I was offering, so I just marked a tree down the creek where he was alligned up to in the field and ran as fast as I could through that creek as it about swept me away. I knew he wouldnt be able to hear me from the sounds of the flooded creek. I popped my head up over the steep bank of the creek and he was at 43 yards from me. Shot and he didnt even flop, just fell over. He had 3 beards :)

I tried that once! I had forgotten about it. Didn't work for me, but I was never a very fast sprinter, and I'm not sure I would even call what I did a sprint at my age/size then any way :D !

I had chased a bird all OVER Catoosa one morning. I saw him a couple of times, and he was alone. He just would not commit to a call.

We went up one huge ridge, and back down, and then ended up at the edge of an old clear cut. I was able to use a drain to get within 80 yds or so. He would gobble at soft purrs only.

He was on top of a small rise which started its ascent about 50 yds from me. I started to get a slight tickle in my throat and knew that I would be coughing soon. I then decided to rush the hill, and hope to at least flush him into a tree for a possible shot. Didn't work. When I got to the crest of the hill, he was no where around. I guess he had heard the train coming. I then proceeded to cough my guts out after having been suppressing it as long as possible.

Now, I want to put a disclaimer that it was not smart running with a loaded gun!

Man, I love this game. Thanks for reminding me :) !

had a gobbler with 3 hens come into a field one mornin, they had no interest in comin my way and i was goin to be late for work if i didnt make a move, so i kicked the bush next to me, and he came outta strut and came running to me, i dont know if he thought a hen was in there or what but he couldnt stand that bush moving.
