I hunt Southwest Tn area near Grand Junction. With it being this late in the season and this far south in the state, are the birds about done? It's been slow the past couple of weekends but did hear a few gobbles but they all went the opposite direction. I could see the 4 longbeards in the field and they didn't have any hens and still went the opposite direction. All I can think of is they aren't interested anymore. Plus these birds are not pressured at all either. What do y'all think?

My guess is they want you to go to them.....they let you know they were....what I would do is find out where they went, probably a strutting zone.....and be there next time.

The four you saw are more then likely subordinate birds, and have no interest it getting whipped anymore by this point in the season. They have interest in breeding just tired of being picked on.

And they aren't done or really even close in this state. Heck in the Deep South birds are still gobbling, strutting, breeding, and coming to calls right now. So they certainly are in this state even SW TN

Keep after them, the being done stuff is a huge myth many hunters believe but is far from reality. The biggest thing that affects late season is hunting pressure and tactics used early. That's why many hunters deal with silent birds late season.

Setternan nailed it!

I have seen birds do their thing well after season multiple times. West TN birds aren't different than middle TN birds, you just have less of them so the hunting may be tougher. I have had some bad days with uninterested birds here during the prime of turkey season. Some days are just off and like Setterman said, those subordinate birds can be call shy because they don't want to get beat up again.

Where I hunt in Southeast TN they have been on fire the last 4 days. I have called in two gobbling the whole way to the gun. Also, heard several hens yelping this morning. My favorite time of year is now, hardly anyone around and you can move on the birds pretty easy.

Have you ever hunted west TN birds? Just wondering what the basis was for your comment?
I am just assuming because they are the same species and subspecies of bird

If you apply that logic, New York turkeys would be the same as Louisiana turkeys? :poke:
only if middle and west TN have that much difference in climate...they were about the same last time I drove that way

Cowman. I wish I had ur knowledge. I guess Mississippi and Alabama opening earlier is just by chance being both are about 10 miles from where I hunt.

Having lived in Bama and hunted Ms birds I feel like I understand that pretty well. We always heard birds gobbling and watched them with hrns well through May. Some as far south as the coast

I'm not saying they don't breed in May. I'm saying in my area 99 per cent of hens are bred by May. That's just my opinion on little part of the world I hunt. Jmo. Could easily be wrong but hunting the same spot for over 25 years in just not a late season fan. I haven't seen a gobbler strut or one with hens in about 12 days. Some years are different. This year just seems everything in "my area" happened earlier than the norm. I'm certainly not stating that as fact just my belief. If cowman lived near he could probably come show me how wrong I am. And I'm certainly not gonna dismiss anybody's beliefs before I walk in his shoes.

They're not "done" by any means. I hunted some middle TN public land Saturday morning and had 2 birds roosted, they gobbled at me for over an hour but wouldn't come close enough. I moved twice and eventually spooked them. I heard others gobbling as well. Late in the day I called one in that came in silent as can be. Unfortunately he came in directly to my left, I'm left handed, so I couldn't shoot. I froze but he got too close, saw me, and ran away. Turkey season isn't "done" until the last day to legally hunt them. Go back out and get him.

I hunt in Lagrange, it's been the worst year we have seen as far as numbers and gobbling.
