Yesterday the biggest sports news story of the 21st century dropped and most didn't notice — the Supreme Court agreed to hear New Jersey's appeal of a ban on the state being allowed to offer sports gambling. For those of you who aren't aware New Jersey has been waging a six year battle to allow its citizens to gamble on sports. Included in that battle has been countless court hearings, filings, arguments, and a voter referendum in which over 60% of state voters said they wanted to have the right to gamble on sports legally within their state's borders. Thwarted on every turn so far, New Jersey was down to its last legal option — a hail mary request that the Supreme Court hear their case and overturn existing federal law.

And New Jersey's desperate heave into the end zone was just caught for a touchdown.

Never understood states that let you gamble on the lottery, horses, and dogs but will not let you gamble on sports. It pretty much comes down to what these states can regulate and benefit financially from.

There's a reason Colorado made marijuana legal and it wasn't because it would benefit the communities in that state..... :)

I suppose gambling could be considered an "illness" but I have a hard time feeling sorry for anyone that doesn't know or respect his particular boundaries and ends up losing everything. I say that both loving to wager and having known several that loved it too much.

Well said...

I wonder if the education system will benefit if it ever passes :pop: ?

Ruger you can run a betting service through the sports forum :D !

Oh wait, the article mentions nothing about Tennessee. It's just another possible scenario floated by Travis.

Tennessee is one of the 50 state in the US, so is included in his discussion.

Want to bet on how long it takes Tennessee to legalize it ;) :D ?

Not really, but I also doubt there would be any way to enforce bets being placed on-line on servers in other States. Fan Dual and Draftkings already have the infrastructure for online betting place. There are also many currently "offshore books" already operating. If the federal regulation were lifted, there would be practically no way to prevent a Tennessean from placing bets. People are betting anyway, and the states aren't benefiting a penny.

I have had a Bovada account for years. I win a few thousand dollars a year and not a word. It will always be doable in TN

I feel for the folks with a gambling addiction, but, IMO, that is on them to address and deal with. I wish TN would add and regulate both casinos and sports gambling with revenue going to the educational system.

I first put $100 in my account. Years later I have added $200 total. In that same account today shows almost $8500.

Then why would you want it legalized where you would be exposed to taxes from both the state and federal levels, as opposed to not with your illegal gambling?

I don't care either way... I can always use this or just go to Vegas. :tu:

He's exposed to federal income tax on those gambling winnings whether his gambling is illegal or legal under state law and whether the book is held in Nevada, TN, or St Martin.

I doubt he's getting a W-2G.
