Promised my 7 year old that I would try my best to help him get his first bird this spring. He has killed 4 deer and handles himself very well in the woods. Therefore I have dedicated most of my time afield this spring to getting him a bird. I called up a longbeard on the juvy hunt but he rushed his shot and missed but he had an awesome experience. The bird came in strutting and gobbling and he got tore up. Since then he has hunted with me as hard as most grown men and has come close on a couple other occasions. Friday morning we got on a bird off the roost and instead of coming up the logging road like we hoped, he came to our left in some thick woods, not offering a shot. We let him go and made a second set up and called him back up but still wasn't able to get a clear shot on him. We left there got some lunch and he said daddy I want to try another place. We arrived at the next farm and saw a few hens feeding in a field, so we decided to set up, do some calling and see what happened. He did not want to call it a day. So about 1:30 I see 4 jakes cresting a small rise in the field coming straight to us about 25 yards. We get his youth model 20 gauge up on his knee and I tell him to ease the safety off and get on the closest one. About 2 seconds later, boom.
