I am set up in the same field edge as yesterday. One other person was hitting the slate call but I haven't heard him in a while. Heard lots of gobbles, mostly jakes... About 15 min ago I saw movement through the bushes about 10 yards away and could make out just enough to see it was a turkey. A few cluck and purrs with the tube and it came in on a string, but was a hen. She looked straight at me only 5 yards in front of me and walked around clucking and purring looking for the other hen and left after a minute or so.

so I have not run any birds off so far. I had my gun on that bird and was disappointed to see no beard.

Now for some more patience and we'll see if one of those bearded birds comes along.

get off the phone and kill a bird, and it sounds like you need a spot where you have better visibility their getting in on you a whole lot closer than i like them to be, good luck brother hope ya bust a noggin this morning

well I'm headed back to the car now, I never saw a jake or gobbler today, but walked up on a lot of hens including 2 real big hens dusting themselves. Maybe the other hunter who was there ran the gobbling birds off. It did sound like he was calling from right under the roost.

Did you actually see the other guy? There have been numerous times when I was sure that there was another person there calling, but it turned out to be a real hen.

Sounds like you are in a good spot. Any chance of getting back in there this evening and catch them as they go to roost?

Remember where that dust bowl is. good place to set up and ambush. the ones with beards dust too.

All the paths around each field were not just mowed, but also plowed up somewhat. The birds had picked one particular spot in the plowed ground to dust. Maybe I should keep an eye on that spot.

Could have been another hen, I was just guessing because there was a lot of calling and it sounded very much like a slate call. Seemed like someone was more willing to talk with the gobblers than the other hens. I do hear a lot of hens though so it's hard to tell sometimes.

I would catch em going to roost but I work in the evenings from wednesday through sunday and tuesday would probably be my only free evening. I might give it a go sometime, but I got to be sure where they are because they seem to pick one slightly different group of trees every night along several hundred yards of tree line by the river.
