I came out of state to start it out a little early this week! After a long drive and a great night's sleep tossing and turning in the front seat of my truck , I wake up at 4 AM all keyed up to hunt and get a spot before the mob scene hits. First bird gobbles and lights it up a whole 1 time! No worries I hear one that sound 32 miles off but he don't know who he is messing with! I go up and down what seems like 48 ridges pull what seems like numerous muscles and finally get to within striking distance! That is about the same time that he gets with his hens and basically laughs as he shuts up not to say another word. I am now about to take the walk of shame back to the truck , whipped , beaten and battered! I can taste the can of potted meat waiting on me now! As I sit on this high point listening and aching. I realize there is nothing in the world like turkey hunting! I will run the hills and hollers as long as the Lord allows me to and enjoy every minute of it ! I am already looking forward to tomorrow, if I can move!

I am in Alabama, I enjoy starting a little early each year if I get the chance. The public birds are tough ! I would not have it any other way. Although I would not be upset if I could find a lonesome two year old at some point while here. Lol

Gobbler log day #2! As I walked out yesterday after crossing the ridges I hit an old logging road that I have walked out before listening . I realized if I had taken it I could have been all over the gobbler instead of crossing up and down what seemed like uncharted territory. So you no the rest, now my plan for this morning was set. I would ease out the old road bed , get about a mile back before daylight and the old gobbler would be in for it! It was perfect as the road bed has a nasty briar thicket in front of it and most don't even realize it's there. After another relaxing night of sleep in the front seat I arrive with deep anticipation as my plan is about to go into effect and the old boy don't even know he has met his match. I head out well before light and get to my listening spot. Just starting daylight- one gobbles and sound like it's in Tn, Then another in the other direction way off! My heart is racing as any moment now he is going to cut loose! Then the moment every turkey hunter dreams of coyotes start going crazy! Birds fire off that sound like they are a few miles off. Now I am thinking to myself who in the world come up with this plan? 30 minutes later - note to self you could be numerous other places you know better but chose to hold a grudge on one particular bird on thousands of acres, 30 minutes later thinking to myself - have you ever even killed a turkey before ? Just a little longer I think , he will fire up. Well needless to say I may take up fishing before my 10 day license expires. You ever had one of those mornings where you think you got one pegged only to find out something with a brain the size of a pea has other plans? I always think of all.the other places I could have been and somehow believe I would have heard a truckload! Lol, as one of mentors used to say " That's why they call it hunting and not killing" Now let me get started on my plan for tomorrow!

I love the play by play, especially the mental anguish and abuse we all give ourselves as another turkey does something totally unpredicatble and makes a fool of us. I can relate all too well. Keep at it, you know the tide can change in a matter of minutes. You can go from a zero to a hero in short order, and it usually happens when we least expect it. Good luck, keep us posted!

I will run the hills and hollers as long as the Lord allows me to and enjoy every minute of it !
I feel the same way.
Sometimes it's swamps & flatlands rather than hills & hollers,
or lakes & rivers, maybe even mountains & ocean.

Am blessed to still be physically able.
And love whatever I'm doing in the Great Outdoors.
