How many of you rely on locator calls to locate a bird or get one to shock gobble? I find myself using them less and less. I haven't used my crow call in a long time, not sure if I even still have one. I do have an owl hooter that I will pull out if I don't hear any other owls and the birds aren't gobbling but usually if I wait long enough a real owl will start hooting.

10 years ago when I was really getting serious about turkey hunting I thought I couldn't go to the woods without my owl hooter and crow call in my vest, and a bird wouldn't gobble mid day unless I blew my crow call to make him[emoji2]

I use mine quite often. I don't go around just blowing one all the time but will use one to pinpoint a bird.

If for some reason turkeys don't gobble on their own in the morning, I will owl, but I dont use or cary a call for that. I have a crow call somewhere in my vest but rarely use it. Only when I'm moving on a bird and need him to gobble to track him, but I'm not in position to call at him yet.

I have an owl call I carry and have use a few times during the season. generally where I hunt I dont need one but if im hunting fresh ground I will use it if nothing has made a sound. once the sun is up I never use one though and to be honest if I lost my owl call at some point I wouldnt even replace it.

I use an owl in the morning if I'm not hearing anything. I have it on a double lanyard with a crow call. I rarely use the crow call anymore.

I use a crow call fairly often. It's a useful tool for me. I use it primarily to keep tabs on a gobbler if I'm out of position and can't kill him where I am.

I use a crow call if I don't know where they are roosting at. On a weekend hunt I will use it a couple of times.

Use locators rarely. I can owl pretty good with my voice, I will use it on occasion. but I believe that on pressured birds you can lock them up. I think crow calls are worse than other locators because googans drove four wheelers and trucks around blowing there lungs through them followed by a wet dog bark box call, peacock, then the sound of a four wheeler driving away again.
Sometimes a little while later a bird may gobble again when he thinks it's safe.

:D

Doesn't this one come up every year?

If used properly they serve their purpose.

I use a crow call quite a bit. Mainly mid day and I'm on the move. It's helps to pinpoint where a bird is at. Very helpful on hilly terrain. Keeps from walking right up on birds and take a risk on bumping them.

I own a crow call...I think. The guy that showed me the ropes back in the 80's could hoot perfectly with his voice, so that's what I do. I do NOT sound very good, but it is successful on roosted birds especially at last light. I'll even just scream/howl to roost one. Locator calls...nope.

Owl at dawn to locate if I'm unsure of roost location. It has saved me many steps when I thought they would be in one place but in reality they are somewhere totally different. After they tip their hand as to their location it goes back in my vest.

Exactly.

While non-users are losing valuable time waiting to pinpoint an exact location, we're already setup.

They are especially useful when I've heard a bird at a distance, and after I've cut that in half (I thought), and check him again he's almost always closer than I thought.

Several years ago I heard one on the back of our place in the predawn. From the faintness of the gobble, I was sure that he was over the crest of the hill down toward the creek. However, when I got close and before crossing the flat, I decided to check with my owl call. He thundered from 80 yrds  ! I sat down, waited for time, and gave him soft stuff to which he walked right to me after flydown. Without the owl call, I would have walked right under him and the game would have been over.
