The thread about Setterman, and the thread about 3" vs. 3.5" reminded me of an advertisement I saw the other day and the discussions we have had on here several times, with Setterman in the mix letting us know his disdain for shooting turkeys past a certain range.

In the latest run of TN Sportsman, there was an ad for Long Beard XR and the caption reads "66 yards is where I dropped him"

I know this will come back up this year and i remember last year when the LB XR shells came out people were saying "yeah they'll reach out there, but they are not saying to do that." well now they are.

Just like technology changes the game in all other aspects of hunting, it will change turkey hunting too. Gone are the days of having to get a turkey into 40 yds. :stir:

Unfortunately, I believe we are in for a lot of wounded turkeys.... :(

I imagine Dr. Grant Woods got more than a few emails when he tested the LBs at 70 yds last year on Growing Deer TV. Irresponsible methinks but I'm sure the marketing folks were just flat tickled.

Longbeard XR poster at the convention said something like "lethal at 65, champion at 40"

I wouldn't shoot one at 65 but has anyone studied the KE/penetration of 5 or 6 lead shot at that range? Is it more of a gamble or is it going to knock them down almost every time? I'm not gonna bother testing it, will just use my Double X at 40 yards max, preferably under 30.

I guess i should have been more clear. I just find it funny and not a good thing, that they are actually advertising these things to kill at 65+ yards.

I'l admit it. I patterned these shells (3.5" #5) at 50 yds and I fell 100% confident if i did my part, there is a dead turkey after the shot at the range.

I'll also admit that in my 2nd or 3rd season turkey hunting, I spotted a jake on a field on Priest and made a sneak to a tree line, but ran out of cover. I stuck my head out to see where he was and of course he saw me and started for the wood line. I stepped out, got on him and fired. he rolled over. I ran to him and when i got there and looked back i realized i was a ways away. I stepped it off and I have long legs.... 62 big steps. I was probably between 60-65 yds. This was using 3.5" mag blends. I wouldn't have shot, if i knew how far he was, but he looked closer.

I know the shells will do it, but if they start advertising it, i think you will have a bunch of people that are new to it, or have almost given up due to striking out, getting energized or re-energized, based on the idea that they only have to get the bird inside 70 yds....

Apparently you don't remember the guy on here last year that videoed himself shooting a gobbler at 80+ yards..
I think they ran him off the site... :smash:
lol. That's hilarious.

Big or small, kill em all

The "that's where I dropped him" slogan was a quote from one of the Drury brothers last year when they first came out. The longbeard shells made overconfidence more affordable, but people have been over confidence in their ability to kill turkeys at long ranges for years.

Over ten years ago a guy I was in high school with bought a new Rhino choke and came to school bragging about how he could put over 60 pellets in a turkey head target at 60 yards. I called bull chit and dared him to prove it. I spent all day convincing a crowd to come, and after school we went and tried it. He managed to put ONE pellet on the entire piece of paper -- in front of about 20 people who already didn't like him.

With the right set-ups no doubt 60 yards is do able, especially with htl loads.
But for me, I like them within 50. If I shoot one past 50, it is a mistake.
30-35 is my perfect range.

60 yards is a done deal with my setup. Yawl don't have to agree with me but I have done a lot and I mean a lot of patterning. I hunt open pines and sixty seems to b the magic spot where the birds on my lease like to hang up and look for a hen. I try to get them closer but if they hang up at 60 they ride in the back of my truck. That's just me and I'm 100 or cent confident.

I'm much the same Muddy. I really really enjoy hand loading my shells and patterning as a side hobby, and there's no doubt I can kill them at 60. I chased a hard gobbling hybrid over half the sioux reservation in Nebraska last year and when he finally poked his head up I didn't think twice. It turned out to be 62. I would 10 times rather mash one at 25, and often pass on long shots, but when the situation requires it, I've got the option. But it aint with factory lead loads.

I've never shot my gun at 60. Post up some pics muddyboots.

When I get over this back surgery I'll try go shoot one. I'll see if I have any old ones. I'm hesitant to show pics. Last time I did several guys accused me of stretching the truth. Just don't like getting into that.

Im old school. The sport of turkey hunting is calling the bird up close. So unfair to the gobbler, you will kill em with long shots, but will also lose them as well. The sport has really changed since I started in the mid seventys. I saw a gobbler decoy on a remote control car at the NWTF show yesterday. I asked myself, what does it take to kill a turkey. Eventually, I think you will see shell manfacturers pushing the limits out farther and farther. Give me one slate, a couple of 3' fed. heavyweight copperplated 5's, and thats all I need.

On a side note did anyone buy the 2 boxes of shells and get the free Lynch box call?
I bought some #5's & my son got some #6's to pattern our guns and got one of the box calls. I haven't used a box call in a long time but it sounds pretty decent .
