Just out of curiosity what's your opinions on downrange energy between a 5 shot long beard and hevI 7's? At 30-40yds. Bigger pellet vs. Heavier pellet is what I'm kind of wondering.

wouldn't drop the money on a hevi so I wouldn't know

If a lead #5 will kill at 50 then I wouldn't worry about 30 or 40 at all

Right, I was just curious as to the down range energy. With a smaller heavier pellet or a larger lighter pellet.

From a physics stand point the 7s will retain velocity the farther out it goes due to size. I'd say they are pretty close you just have 2x the amount of pellets with the 7s

Keep in mind that a majority of the pellets in the "hevi 7" shells are actually 7.5 or smaller. They will shoot a dense pattern, but I would not trust them past 40 yards. They are not THAT much heavier than lead. Lead is about 10.5-11 g/cc and Hevi is 12 g/cc. So you aren't getting a huge increase in density and you are getting a pretty substantial decrease in size. A lead 5 (true size) will have more energy than a hevi 7.5 - but substantially fewer pellets.

Keep in mind that the Federal Hevyweight shells are 15 g/cc -- so you do get an appreciable increase in mass for the pellet size. A federal HW 7 will substantially out perform a lead 5.

I'll take the LB 5's over the 7 Hevi any day. I hunted with the 7's for two years and just never really like them. For paper and numbers they are king, but true on bird performance at ethical ranges I think lead 5's perform better. This is just my opinion, and I no others have theirs. Lead density is right at 11 g/cc vs 12 g/cc for Hevi, not much difference at all. I saw a test were a guy shot a 1/2 piece of drywall at 40 yds. with 7 Hevi and the LB 5's. About 12 pellet of the 7''s pasted thru, and between 1/2 to 3/4 of the load of 5's pasted thru. Hevi 6 compares a whole lot better to 5 lead than the 7's do. Now if you moved on to the HW 7 at 15 g/cc or TSS at 18 g/cc it's a whole different ball game. I personally just like a bigger shot size, and like I said earlier, that's just me. Turkeys heads ain't made of drywall and I promise that any of them will work. Some people love the 7's, in the hevi's I like the straight 6's and the mag blend the best.

I have lb 5's,6's, hevi7's and magblends. I'm shooting the lb 5's. I was just curious as to what you guys thought. Thanks for the info.

while some of that is accurate other parts of that is not so much. I wouldn't say "MAJORITY" are 7.5's. there are tons of 7s out there and just the few you may or may not have cut open wouldn't count for all of them. In addition trusting them to 40 or past is PROVEN to work with the Hevi 7s. Just look over on OG and do some research on the 7s. They will provide enough energy out to past where a man should be shooting. They will purely flatten a bird at 40yds without question.

you are correct about the HW 7s but due to the weight of them you have less in the shell and they already pack them with lower OZ sizes then hevi not to mention the flight control wad issue.

again not really arguing with you but thats just how i see it.

I dont know the math or science behind it, I just know Hevi 7's will consistently hammer birds to any range that you should be shooting anyway.

I know we disagree on some points on the Hevi's, and I'm not saying that they won't kill turkeys. They will. But when I shot them I was not impressed with their 40-45 yard performance, and I think that, kinetic energy wise, hevi "7s" are inferior to lead 5s.

This Chart was posted on gobbler nation recently. It shows in a chart the variation of pellet sizes in a Hevi 7 shell. I did not make it and can therefore not vouch for it's reliability beyond what was posted with it. It's a small sample size, and they likely vary from batch to batch, but it matches up with what I've seen when I cut them open. Out of 512 pellets, 270 of them were 7 1/2 or smaller:

"This is from a Retired Science Teacher that posted this on the hevi forum years ago regarding the 3 inch 2oz #7. I have no reason to believe this info is flawed or inaccurate. Thing with hevi what would be the breakdown from the next batch of shot they load."

Southern yes we disagree in some areas but debate is good. I'd like to see the same chart with lead 5s as well for comparison. People always bring up the shot consistency stuff with hevi whole just assuming lead loads are not the same way.

There was a thread in OG where folks where cutting open the 5s and 6s from the long beards and there was a wide variety of shot sizes in them.

I just go by performance. I've seen the damage 7s can do at 40 and beyond and it was impressive. I don't shoot them so I am not attached to them in any way. If they were as easy to find as magblends and less fickle with lot #s I would shoot then any day of the week

This is correct for the 12 gauge, but ironically just the opposite for the 20 gauge.

The 12ga 3 1/2" packs 1 7/8 oz of VERY heavy shot, and it's flying much faster than anything from "Hevi" brand or "Magnum Blends". But, IMO, a 1 7/8 oz load of Fed's HW #7's (leaving muzzle at about 1300 fps) is arguably as effective a turkey load as 2 1/4 oz of "Hevi" anything ----- provided your gun/choke combo will pattern the Feds comparably, and provided you have no issues with that "Flite Control" wad.

1 7/8 oz of denser #7's at 1300 fps vs. 2 1/4 oz of less dense #5, #6, or #7's at 1100 to 1200 fps = Maybe not much difference

The "Flite Control" wad often helps those with factory full or more open chokes shoot much tighter patterns without their purchasing an after-market X-Full "turkey" choke.

But for the 20 gauge turkey hunter, the Federal HW's top everything else out there that's commercially available.
Fed packs 1 1/2 oz of HW shot in a 3" 20 gauge hull.
By using #7 HW shot, I'm not only approaching 12 gauge performance with a 20 ga, but it's superior to most 12 gauge set-ups using lead loads.

I like the 20 gauge simply because it's so light & easy to carry.

It is amazing what good 20 gauge loads will do these days. I'm really not sure why Federal doesn't make an #8 shot shell, especially in the 20. A #8 in 15g/cc would still have considerably more energy than a #7 in 12g/cc (i.e., Hevishot). I don't have a 20 yet, but it's the next gun on my list. I've made some TSS handloads for a couple buddies with M2s this year, and it is unbelievable what an 1 5/8 load will do.
