Shot a bird this morning. He came through the woods just before noon, gobbling priodically the whole way to my call. He has attributes of a Jake but a decent beard on him, not the litle 1 or 2" paintbrush.
15.9lbs
double beard, 3.5" and 4.25"
3 long tail feathers (on a Jake, aren't there usually more?)
nubs for spurs

Is this beard unusual for a Jake?

Our jakes here usually have a 5 or maYbe even 6 inch beard. If his tail feathers are uneven and he has nubs for spurs (1/2in) he is a jake.

Those are what we call super jakes. We have killed several with 10" beards but only 3/4" spurs and weigh under 20 pounds

That's called a 2 year old bird

It seems all the jakes I have seen had short stubby beards.
Hopefully when I get done with my Army training this month, there will still be some time to hunt. Until then, Mr Jake was in the wrong place at the right time.

Most jakes I see have 2 to 4 inch beard but they could be longer. Anything over 5 or 6 I'd consider a super jake but there's really no technical definition, other than early born jake.

yea that's a 2 year old. The most notorious birds for turning a slow day into a bunch of gobbling and coming in on a string.

That's a naive opinion imo. Many times 2 year olds are tough to kill because they're confident enough to gobble but timid of committing to a call. Sure some run in but I have more 3 year olds kamikaze then 2 year olds. It's one of the big misconceptions of turkeys is that 2 year olds just bolt to every call they hear

I agree whole heartedly

Most early-season, gobbling turkeys killed are 2 yr olds. I love finding those. It's the silent ones that I detest, as they try to sneak in and steal a honey without making a peep.

Give me a gobbling jake, who plays the game, over one of these any day! I may shoot him, or I may not, as it just depends on my mood :D ! It is, without argument, a MUCH better hunting experience.

I'm with you nothing I detest more then silent sneakers. Had one yesterday I let walk because he just showed up. There no fun and there's no excitement. I won't shoot a gobbling jake, but they're more fun for sure then a silent longbeard. Plus they do weird stuff like masturbate on the ground

Most of the single birds I've struck mid day and called in were 2. A couple were 3

I think this jake was one of four I saw earlier in the morning. They were super noisey over a the hilltop, enough that I tried to get a recording.
The two big Toms were having fun taunting me by sunning and strutting in the middle of the road, just walking up and down the road. They had 6 hens with them, so saw no need to go anywhere.

It's fun, but it's also fun to kill the 4 or 5 year old bird that's caused you grief for a few years too. I tend to take turkey hunting personally lol

I'm not sure that "fun" is the correct term. It becomes a "quest" matching wits with a season wrecker :) !
