I was talking turkey hunting with a friend today and we decided to quit talking about booking a hunt and do it.

Something to look forward to since we lost the land we had been hunting the past couple years.

Would love to complete a slam.

Where would you go? Or have gone?
Any advice where to start?

Looked into doing the Osceola last year and about croaked when I started seeing the prices there.

Looking at a DIY hunt in Kansas or Nebraska.
Not against booking with an outfitter but I hear a great deal of public hunting is available.

I've just had a real bad taste for hunting public land here locally and would hate to drive 10 hours or so for the same courtesy. The Wolf river WMA is the worst for people coming in and setting up 50 yards from you.

Thanks for your input. Have you gone after any of the other species?

If I'm gonna pay an outfitter for turkeys I'd save and save money until I could go down to hunt for ocellated turkeys and would get a full body mount if I killed one.

But if I was going for a slam here in the states I would like to hunt merriams turkeys

Exact same here.
Was in Campeche doing research on them a few years ago. Made some contacts and kept up with them. The wildlife you will see there is off the charts.

If you are wanting to look at going after your grand slam, I would book with an outfitter in Florida for the Osceola. It is by far the most difficult to get on public land and be successful. I have an outfitter I would highly recommend if you want the info, PM me.

As far as Rio and Merriam, there are a lot of public access that is good hunting in those areas. Kansas for Rio's and NW Nebraska or South Dakota for Merriams.

Good luck which ever way you choose to go!

Where in Campeche were you working and what outfitter do you know there?
I have a great friend that outfits for Ocellated and wander if it's the same one you know.
