Over the last 10 years or so I have had tremendous success getting kids and adults alike their "first" of several species, turkeys, deer, hogs, even trophy fish. All except my best friends kid. Try as I might, I cannot get it to come together for him, and this past weekend was no different.

We opted to sit out Sat morning due to cold and wind, and hit AEDC on Sunday morning to a VERY crisp but manageable 21* and no wind. I went straight to my honey hole that has produced birds every year, including his dads first bird about 12 years ago with me. I killed my best Eastern ever right there last year. Long story short, we didnt hear a thing, didnt see a thing, not the first bit of scratching either. I cannot fathom why the birds are not there this year, they are always there. No changes to the area at all. We picked up and hit a second place Ive had good luck at, again, no sign whatsoever.

We then went to my lease to finish clearing the trails due to massive ice storm damage a few weeks ago. This is my 15th year hunting this place, I killed my first bird ever here. Ive had absurd hunts that had to be seen to be believed since its such a small piece and with turkeys you need a lot of ground. Last year was the worst ever, but still had 20-30 birds in each picture in several places on the lease, up to 7 mature gobblers together in many pics at the start of season. This year, in the past 3 weeks, 4 lone hens, and two lone gobblers. Its not even going to be worth hunting this season. I am beside myself for this kid, I dont want him to lose his interest, and my Mojo has appeared to vanish. He says hes bad luck, I tell him thats not true, but im starting to think it is!

Rant over.

My early success skyrocketed when I realized that I wasn't married to the family property, and that it wasn't cheating to look for new spots with more birds.

You can't kill them if they aren't there!

That's why I chose to go to the WMA for the youth hunt, double whammy to get skunked out there.

Sounds like you pay too much attention to your "cameras", which is typical of todays hunters. If they ain't got pictures of them, they ain't there. Yet another example of the lack of "woodsman" skills todays hunters possess.

LOL! OK, you got me.
I guess you have never seen a flock of turkeys feed through an area? You may want to educate yourself on what turkey scratching looks like.....and when you dont see any sing, and the cameras dont show them, how exaclty are the turkeys there?

This reminds me of why I quit coming to the site last year.

Ahh don't sweat it, there's one ... or two ... or three in every bunch :rotf: .

I personally enjoy the comedy that is provided.

BTW, birds seem to still be wintered up in a lot of areas, so don't lose hope just yet on your spots.

Also, you might want to google what a turkey track looks like to use for future reference ;) :D !
