This is a buck I first got on cam back in 2012. He has never made incredible jumps in antler growth but has consistently gotten bigger. I'm not sure if he is 5.5 or 6.5 but know for a fact he is at least 5.5 and definitely going to be a deer I hunt hard this year.

Here is the progression he has made. Starting in 2012

2013

2014

2015

2016

Very cool man. it's interesting to see the difference in the development between each deer as they age. They are unique each and everyone. Good luck this fall!

I have been fortunate enough to kill two bucks that I have had at least 4 years of pictures of. Neither deer was very big but I was extremely happy to kill both of them. I spend a lot of time running cameras and keeping up with specific deer. Hopefully I get a chance at this deer. Just curious what you guys think about his age. 5.5 or 6.5?

I can only say 5 1/2 or older at present.
Might change that to 6 1/2 or older after seeing lots of pics from each of the prior years, but suspect he might be a "tweener", either born very late or very early, making him somewhat "in between" our standardized labeling ages. He could be almost as close to just "6.0" as either 5.5 or 6.5.

Keep in mind our standardized aging is for the age in years plus 0.5 for the primary breeding time of each fall (typically the month of November in most of TN), so very technically, we're not saying he's either "5 1/2 or 6 1/2" in July, but rather what he will be in November 2016.

I have had several similar experiences, some of which pre-dated my having lots of reliable trail cams (or trail cams period).

One of my most revered bucks was one I believed to be 7 1/2 (taken in the Year 2006). He was a 140-class mainframe 9, but had been a 150-plus class buck (with much longer tines) as a 4 1/2 to 6 1/2. He seemed to have lost a lot of everything his last year, especially tine length, and I've seen that happen with numerous fully mature bucks, although they typically become more unique and grow more stickers and abnormal points.

Unfortunately (my opinion on it being "unfortunate"), those bucks most likely to live to 4 1/2 or older tend to be mainly those bucks genetically possessing below average antler potential. They're basically the bucks that seemingly no one wants to kill when they're 3 1/2 or younger, while on the other hand, relatively few of the bucks with above average antler genetics will survive past 3 1/2, with most getting whacked by 2 1/2. This is sometimes referred to as hunter induced antler "high-grading", somewhat similar to timber cutters mainly cutting the most desirable middle-aged trees, mainly leaving the "trash" trees to grow older.

As an aside, I once killed a buck believed to have been 6 1/2 or older, and he was only a spike. This wasn't one I'd been able to "track", so I have no idea if he had more normal antlers for his age when he was younger. I will say on the day I killed him, it was during the middle of the rut, and he was behaving fully like a fully mature buck, very cautiously slipping along the side of ridge at 12:30 p.m. (mid-day). He wasn't feeding, just slipping along very steadily, allowing me to watch him walk for about 100 yards, finally deciding to take him, in part because he looked so big to me (other than his rack).

I must admit if just seeing the last pic I would not peg him as being as old as he is.
You're not alone, as underaging is very typical of summertime aging/guessing that we all try our hand at.

Agree, but it's not just under-aging.
Many above-average antlered bucks (for their real ages) are routinely over-aged during the summer as well.
IMO, unless you have a prior year's history with an identifiable buck, it's really more a crap shoot on guessing the age (during summer) than most would believe.

IMO I think it is probable that that deer is 6.5 year old. Based on your pictures alone. But as you notice that tie between the shoulder and neck isn't really hidden as much as it should be. An awesome deer that I would like to see when you harvest him. Very impressed with your History of this guy! Good luck this fall! Estimate his score? 135-140" ?

Here are the newest pics I have of him. It's weird to me how much bigger deer look on WGI cams than the Moultries I have been using. You guys think he will score 140"?

No matter the score I bet there is not an inch difference from right to left side. Almost perfectly symmetrical
