Do you think his horns will grow much larger with the thick mass at the base?

Here is a picture of him last year (I think same deer)

I agree with Hillbilly. Some deer will start shedding in a week or two. He'll most likely be a brute next year or the year after though.

No and he may be a buck that will always have shorter tines. I have a 5.5 year old 10 point that his tines have never been over 6 inches but he's mature and 20 inches wide.

You can look at velvet antlers and tell if they are still growing. That top pictured buck is just finishing up his growth. Don't expect much more than what he has in that picture.

That buck does have some mass, but then velvet always makes the antlers look much thicker than they really are.

How do you tell if they're still growing in velvet?

By looking at the ends of each point. While they are still growing rapidly, the ends of each point will be bulbous and the skin shiny. Once the tips of each point are done growing, they shrink down to a point and the skin looks dull. Notice in the picture of that buck that most of his points have thinned down and the tips look dull. The tip of the buck's right beam (on the left in the picture) is still growing a little, and the tip of his left G3 also looks like it is still growing a little, but most of the points are done growing longer.

I new about the bulbous but not the shiney aspect. That's a good close up pic to really look at and see the differences you speak of for comparison.

What I want to know is if that is sericia lespedeza in that deer's mouth? If so, it's the first time I've ever seen a deer touch the stuff !

I noticed the same thing! A deer eating sericea? Wow, that's a new one!
