This might be a stupid question but I wanted to ask before I blew myself up or something but is it safe to shoot target loads through a turkey choke? Like 6 or 7 shot. Im gonna get me a set of the Williams Fire Sights for my Winchester and to be honest I dont wanna go through the punishment and I dont wanna waste my turkey loads. I know Ill have to shoot a couple but could I get them adjusted pretty close with light loads first and then move em on in with turkey loads? It is a Comp-N-Choke .655 or .665 one or the other.

They will shoot fine. I always use dove loads to sight in. I shoot 2 or 3 and then check target it is easy to tell where the majority of the shot is going that way.
I gotta chime in here... so if I am practicing my aim, it's ok to use cheap dove loads? Then I can use the expensive turkey loads to actually get the right pattern... or will the pattern be so different it will mess up my aim?

shoot all the dove loads you want to get sighted than shoot a couple of turkey loads to besure of there poi

Well I will put my experience in here....

If your trying to get POA/POI close and your shooting 20 yards or less.... you might reach your goal.....

I tried shooting farther (40 yards) just for trying..... wasn't much of the shot hit the actual target where I was aiming.... more of the bottom edge of a 4'x4' square target.... most of the shot hit the ground in front of it.

Your gun must have been shooting low, no way you couldnt hit a 4x4 target at 40s with a dove.load..at 40yds you should have covered the target up....most any gun will full up a wash tub at 40ys..LOL I want mine to cover up a basketball at 50yds.

For new sights on a shotgun, I sight in with slugs at 50 yards. Note: do NOT use your turkey/full choke for shooting slugs.

I avoid shooting slugs about as much as I do shooting turkey loads...probably more so since I shot rifled slugs out of a rifled choke when I was real young. OUCH!

I will get close at 30 with dove loads, fine tune with a cheaper turkey load at 40 then put my hevi shot.

shoot your dove loads at about 10 steps to get sight close then move back to forty yards to fine tune for turkey loads.

I sight mine in at 15 yards with dove loads. Then i move the target to thirty and shoot my nitros and center my pattern from the wattles up. I aim at the wattles so this is what works for me. If they are at fifty i aim dead on the head.

Are you talking about doing that in prep for patterning turkey loads as a first step?
