Bottomland birds are hard to hunt if you are hunting them in cutover and strictly wooded areas.
Not being able to see them way out makes them hard to prepare for...I have had plenty walk up on me and never say a word. Bust me every time.
Some times, they never call back, even when they are way off . It's hard to sit still and hold tight when you don't see or hear a bird for an hour. everytime I get up to move a few hundred yards, I'm afraid I'll bust birds and do, sometimes.
As far as not encountering birds in the bottoms, well, maybe you are and just don't know it.
Bottom birds seem to grow up and spend more time in the thick woods and know how to survive. Their best bet is to NOT announce their whereabouts...lol.
I've watched birds stand still for quite some time during windy days....no place in particular, just stop and stand there....
good luck
