Took a shot on a nice buck this evening at about 100 yds. My muzzleloader was about an inch high at 50 yds 2 weeks ago. I killed an 8 with it last weekend and will be shooting again to double check. Anyway he was broadside and about 10 yds away from the tree line in a field. I was hunting from the ground and bracing off my knee, a shot I've made multiple times before. I noticed myself shaking somewhat due to the size and surprise at the speed I found everything happening. Anyways long story short I pulled the trigger on what I felt was a good shot. Anyways once the smoke cleared I see him flagging me on a solid deer trail he must have entered from. I also notice that there are more than just him but couldn't make out what they were. He ran a spike off that was entering the field and that is when I first saw him so I'm assuming a hot doe. The only reason I am pretty positive it was him that I was drawn to running off was because I could see the white horns even from that distance. I looked for blood where he was standing, did circles, went into the woods where I saw him enter and no blood. To beat it all when I get up to look for blood I see him after he sees me and he must have circled back either confused or trying to find the hot doe. He takes off and blows at me, which I take as another sign I missed. To be honest, this could have been a different buck I guess but it looked like him at quick glance. Now I find myself wondering if my mind was playing tricks on me seeing him a second time and if he could have been a different deer.

The question I find myself asking is has anyone hit a deer to have it run off flagging and bounding? They usually tuck their tail and run if they have been hit good in my experience. I searched for blood for 1.5 hours and never found the first drop. It wasn't the most confident that I have ever been in a shot because I rushed it slightly but I've found dead deer with more difficult shots. I haven't missed many over my hunting years, can count on 1 hand in 25 years but this is the 2nd this year. I'm not sure if I am going through a slump, not consistent in loading practices, or what is going on.

Any insight is greatly appreciated and always appreciate the advice of other hunters. I'm shooting 100 gr, 295 power belts, hollow points.

With no blood to follow all you can do is grid search the direction the deer went. Go slow...carry binoculars to look at things that catch your eye at a distance....look for anything out of place or abnormal.... sometimes your following leaves kicked up.....don't just search 50 yard off field....grid search 200 or 300 yards....this way if you find him or not you can have peace of mind knowing you did all you can....also, if you can, run a few cameras in the area....you might get pics of him for confirmation..... lastly, I shot powerbelt for several years...killed deer with them... majority I had zero blood trail to follow...I just followed tracks and leaves kicked up to find them....I have since switched to Barnes T-EZ and have had better performance with penetration and blood trails...not high power rifle blood trails....but something to follow....good luck.

How far was the shot? You never said. Do you have peace about what happened that caused a miss for next time? Anything over 100 yds, a knee is probably not stable enough of a rest. I found personally that a good rest will eliminate most misses. I even take a trigger stick into my climber and stuff it inside of my rubber boot. It gives me lots of confidence in my shot.

Yeah i do. Bad thing is I forgot my shooting stick in the truck. Fever got me honestly. I remember thinking I need to settle down before shooting - then next thing I know I'm pulling the trigger. Maybe I tried to time it. I've killed enough to know better but got caught up in the excitement and speed. I don't feel like I took a bad shot with his position. He was broadside at 110 yds in a field. I hit that within a kill radius 9/10 times at the range. But I feel like I rushed it and shot before I had my crap together if that makes sense. Knee isn't the best rest but usually I'm steady enough to get it done. If I was going to rest again without my stick from the ground that is how I would have taken it if I'm honest. But the picture did provide me with the comfort I needed for a clean miss coupled with the way he flagged me, him circling back and blowing, and no blood. I am usually in a stand with a stable rest but I had my nephew with me for the first time and didn't want to get him up in a stand yet. I think me thinking about my stuff and his stuff the stick just got overlooked. I noticed it walking in because it also serves as a walking stick. Thanks for the advice though as I need to take that same approach and put more emphasis on having that stick at all times. Moving it up on the list of important things and not just consider it a nice to have.
