Well, only heard one roost gobble this morning on a quick hunt before work...then I had SEVEN longbeards at 40 yds at 605. Of course I HAD to have the only one who was strutting that also HAD to be behind a thick bush. The rest got all around him, so I called and the all gobbled and went into strut...now I have no idea which is which! :bash: Call again, they all gobble and walk another 4-5 steps my way and I shoot AT the first one to stick his head up and whiff. A couple flew off but the rest just stood there, so I drew on another, but I just couldn't pull the trigger for some reason. Oh well, stood up and stepped it off and it was only 27 yards and I was using longbeards. I only use them when hunting fields, but I really need to work on gauging distance in that early light. I used to be real good at it, but age must be doing things to me...like not taking that second shot!

It happens man. I shot one at 40 yards with longbeard 5 shot Friday morning and it flew off. I knew my aim was good and I was steady and kept my head down so I went to where I seen him fly into the woods and found him. He was still alive but was so out of it i almost stepped on him and he didnt even know i was there so I finished him off at close range. But at 27 yards it was hopefully close enough that it was a clean miss. Get back after them, it sounds like u have a few around

That is impressive. It has been years since I have had more than 2 LBs around me at one time in the spring. I hate a miss as much as anyone, but today is a new day, put it behind you and go kill one of those seven, you know they are there. Good luck, hope you connect soon!

Yeah, I have never had that many at one time ever. Weird thing is, I only saw one fly into the pasture which was the big boy. The rest were just suddenly there.

If you ain't missed you ain't been hunting very long. Make that next one count. Good luck.

Missed 2 myself this year... but it's the hunt itself that counts, and sounds like you'll remember this hunt more than many of the hunts you killed a bird in the past :)

I've missed 2 this year. Only missed 4 times before now in 20+ years of turkey hunting. all have been close shots (under 15 yards) in the past. This year, missed one opening day at 35 yards in the woods, he runs back up the hill and toward me. Missed him again at 25 yards. only had 2 shells in my gun and he walked by at 5 yards. Tuesday had one come strutting right down a field edge and hang up about 25 yards behind a brush pile. he finally walks off and comes in the woods at 28 steps and I shot, missed him!! missed 2 turkeys with 3 shots this year. Hard to think about. The 2 I've killed were both under 10 yards!.
