I had been watching and calling him for almost 3 hours, while he and his hens went around the field...

Well he came by at about 30 yards, alone, and I thought it was the hen at first, but then I saw the beard. Missed with 2 shots... I am pissed off right now.

maybe I might stumble on another one today but I dunno

x3 on the miss. went back after him and got him few days later. go get him

Thanks yall. I probably wont get back out till next weekend because of school but I will be out as soon as I can. The bird had so many hens, I had to wait almost 3 hours before they left and he came by, in range, alone. At that point he didn't pay much attention to my cluck and purrs at that point but I could have at least made a noise to get his head up instead of shooting while he was walking.

Maybe next time I will set up on another side of the field. The field seems to be a strut zone. Same field I shot my first bird (jake) a couple weeks ago.

As far as educating the birds, do you think he will be more wary of calls coming from the bushes next time? He definitely paid more attention to his hens in the field than me although he did seem torn between us a few times. Now that he was shot at twice from where he thought a hen was, do you think he will spook more easily if he hears one from the bushes again or are turkeys just not that smart?

I don't know, can't say for sure. He might have taken some lead but he sure took off like there was no tomorrow. I can only hope they were clean misses

Welcome to the club. Don't get down on yourself and get right back at it. As far as educating the bird I wouldn't worry to much about it.

I have missed a few as well. Happens to all of us. My favorite miss is when I didn't see a 1/2 sappling-10' in front of me. I was pre-occupied with the bird. reflex264

it was going to happen at some point. I went 10years without missing and missed one clean as day this year at 35yds!

yup it is very frustrating but now it is personally between that bird and myself. his name is already on my last tag. best part is i know EXACTLY which one he is due to blowing off one of his tail fans lol

YOU CAN FLY BUT YOU CANT HIDE

Did you step the distance off to recheck on how far he was?

No but I am fairly sure of it. The field is 150 yards wide... I'd say he couldn't have been any farther than 1/4 way out in the field, probably closer. My gun shoots low/left and the bird was moving. I bet I could have hit him if I had just made a funny noise to get him to stop and put his head up.
