My guess would be to see how much they are actually eating, or to keep the deer or other animals from getting under it and possibly turning it over....or damaging the grain distributor.
 
All the guesses are right! We put cage up to keep deer and coons from eating the majority of the corn, Most falls straight down So deer and coons would camp out under feeder all nite. Never found a shed around the cage but we have tried it the last 2yrs in hopes 1 would catch in the fence.
 
Yea i know bout the 10 days, cant tell by looking at spout on feeder but its empty. All is good
