Thinking about getting a true turkey gun. I own a mossberg 835 but was thinking about the 870. Is there really any noticible advantages to either? I own a older modle 835 with the over bored barrel but dont see much diffrence between the big barrel and the regualar 12 gauge barrels. Also I am a lover of all things Remington

I have used an 835 for the past 20 years or so. A good friend hunts with an 870. He & I have killed a bunch of birds & mine ain't no deader than his & vice-versa. You can't go wrong with either gun IMO. IMO, not really a need to get rid of $300-400 when you already got a gun quite capable of producing a lifetime of turkeys.

Thanks. I am just wanting a camo gun because I got busted by a bird last year and I am pretty sure It was the glare on the gun. And If I decide to get a new gun I am giving my old mossberg to my dad who already uses the 835 with my slug barrel during deer season.

Yep, just put you a Sims recoil pad on it to tame some of that recoil....

You can do some research reading in the Turkey Guns forum on OldGobbler about choke tube recommendations.

If your worried about camo..... paint it yourself..... plenty of info on that too.

I have had an 870 for 15 years and never ha issues out of them. IMO I like them better then the 835. To me they are a more solid refined feel to them plus I believe the 870 recoils less and is a bit more smooth in the action. All that's just my opinion though

There both good guns unless you just want a new gun the moss will work

I own both killed alot of Toms with both, My 870 is newest so I take it most! The MB feels looser than the 870 thats the only difference I know, its all personal preferance. Now you are getting a lot of jibber jabber about which choke and shell to use. I will throw my jibber jabber in also. If you get a new gone try every combination you can with a target, every gun is different, that way you will have what shoots best in YOUR gun and you will be confident when you pull the trigger!

If you have an 835 you already have a "true turkey gun". I have used one fort he past 10 years and it whacks em and stacks em like nobody's business. I hear people bash em all the time, but I have not had anything but success with mine.

the gun you have will be a good gun, just shoot some different choke/shell combos and find what shoots best. my only other advice whould be not to take 55+ yrd shots,if you have to take shots like that maybe its time to practice your turkey calling skills.
