I was up in Kansas this weekend doing some scouting and placing a few trail cameras on public land. I mount them high to make them harder for people and deer to notice them and more difficult for thieves to steal them. I took a few pictures with my iPhone in case anyone would like to see some examples. The thick forest canopy made it tough to take decent pictures.

Same thing I generally do. I take a set of two or three Summit buck steps with me and place my cams 10-12 feet up a tree. Bought some neat screw in mounts from gator-n-buck that make positioning easy. I've yet to lose a camera to thieves with this set up. Makes some neat shot angles as well.

I know a guy that walks with a limp that used to do that so be careful. He fell off a little step ladder in the woods, tore his ankle to pieces amazingly enough, and hopped and hobbled out of the woods until he got within cell range.

That is a good point and I should add that I wear a harness and use a lineman's belt when placing and checking the trail cameras, just as if I was putting up a hang on treestand. The lineman's belt is key because you really need both hands free to place the camera

The "mount high and point down" technique is fine for monitoring a given spot on the ground, such as a bait station, salt lick, or scrape, but that mounting system will cause you to miss deer in the background. In addition, that mounting style can be a pain in the butt for anyone hanging multiple cameras or for those who move their cameras frequently.
