On the farm behind the house the first week of the season had been pitiful. Decided to try a mid day hunt today and see if my luck would change. Climbed to the top of the ridge where I either had to turn left or right. Broke out the glass floated out a few yelps...nothing. Went ahead with my plan and turned right down a logging road. I had went about a hundred yards when I stopped and thought, did I just hear a gobble? Stood there for about 30 seconds and heard him again back the direction I had come from. He was so far I could barely hear him. Turned around and went back to where I had called from before and slid up next to a big walnut. Hit him with 3 yelps and he cut me off but was still a good 200 yds. Waited about 5 min. then gave him a purr and 2 clucks and laid the call down. He gobbled again at about a hundred then a few minutes later I could hear him drumming. He knew where I was so I just enjoyed the show until he was at 27 yards and laid him to rest at 1:52.
