It's been a weird season for us so far, me and my buddy only killing a bird a piece.

As of this morning I've come to conclusion that the reason we have experienced silence is the number of jakes. I've seen an unreal amount this year so far. I've watched a group of 8 run off 2 longbeards, and a group of 5 run off a gobbler. This morning I seen 3 jakes strutting for 2 hens while a longbeard stood alone a few hundred yards away.

I've also about come to the conclusion the groups of hens I'm seeing alone are Jennys but I'm not sure about that.

I honestly don't think the toms are gobbling much because of large groups of jakes ganging on them.

A plus for this is it sounds like yall might be making a come back with this good hatch from last yr. Low kill off by yall this yr and another great hatch this summer will be big for yall next yr.

Hens.

If there's that many jakes theres jennies for days.

Sure some of it could be jakes, but it's porbably a combination of factors

Might be on to something Rock. I know you're trying to improve habitat to grow your population and that might be exactly what's happening. A couple of years ago I saw two groups of 9 and 14 jakes...it was one of the worst gobbling years I recall in recent memory.

I know your correct, had 4 jakes run off a gobbler from me a week ago. Those adult gobblers are scared of several jakes together!Come home from church today and saw 3 jakes in my hay field!

Unfortunately this is on my lewis and Murray county properties, no turks to speak of in Lawrence

I don't know for sure if that's why there's not much gobbling, but there are a lot of jakes out there this year. Very possible conclusion...as well as there being more jennies to breed.

I had 5 jakes last year on my place. This year i saw (during deer season) and on trail cams 9 toms. Gobbling has been good and I have 0 jakes that i know of now.

Sounds like you guys will have a good flock next season and will probably be done in 4-5 hunts.
