My first spoonbill

While visiting a friend in louisiana we went snagging some spoonbills. This was my first one. We caught a few more. All were released because its the law there.

I've never caught one but I was fishing with my uncle for catfish on the Tn River right below the dam. We were running 3 leaders off the main line with 4 0 hooks. One of his leader lines wrapped around an 18 pound spoonbill's tail and the hook looped back over the line securing it. The fish could run away from him and every reel was bringing the fish in backwards. Between fighting the fish, the current, and the gill plate opening up from being reeled in backwards we thought he had a 100 pound cat on the line.

my grandfather and stepdad used to catch those things about 30 years ago to sell the roe. the flesh tasted pretty good but a little course.

Those are cool. I have never caught one though.
