Will be this weekend to chase a tom. Any advice on successful ridge country turkey tactics is appreciated. Ive only got experience on toms who are drowning from MS backwater and flat ground

Wear your track shoes because it is a death sprint to any bird that gobbles. Idiots there have zero ethics and look at cutting you off as part of the LBL experience.

Hunt sign and hope you can call in a bird that doesn't gobble. The second bit of advice is to sleep in and head out about 9am. By that time some of the run and gun cowboys have given up. If you can get one to gobble mid-morning, then there is a "slight" chance you can work him in without some googan screwing you up.

LBL has to have more googans roaming around than anywhere in the state. I used to hunt it pretty hard, but got tired of the clown show.

A bunch of googans that run and totally mismanage the land there too

that's what happens when you let the federal govt. run anything....

Headed that way too for the first time. Have met numerous other hunters in the woods this spring who mentioned they are going too. Can't wait to experience the clusterf it is going to be! I wouldnt doubt 300-400 hunters showing up.

I backed out at the last minute for this weekend. I have 2 good friends that went down yesterday and set up camp. I talked to them this morning and they said there are a ton of people there already. I am glad I didnt go.

Get to your spot early, after about the third truck pulls in and let's you know where they are going just drive down the road and pull over somewhere that a truck is not parked and hope you hear one. You are going to have the normal quota , non quota and everyone in between at LBL this weekend. I wish you the best but I believe they made a huge mistake not having any quota hunts beforehand, that would have thinned out the crowd. Plus the fact that this non quota hunt starts on the weekend instead of the typical Monday that it normally starts. Stay safe and best of luck to all that venture that way!

I almost got shot there opening morning. True story.

No way LBL can be worse than that place.

I REALLY hope I am wrong, but I'm not going to be surprised to hear of someone getting shot on the upcoming LBL debacle this weekend. If you are an old white headed fellow, you better not take off your hat while in the woods. Googans + TSS+80 yd hail mary shots are a recipe for disaster.

Is it really that bad? How many 10's of thousands of acres is LBL? I have been able to find plenty of space on crowded WMA's that are much smaller?

A lot of land and very few birds. That naturally concentrates people.

Well my first trip afield was a success. Heard a lot of owls at daybreak and a gobbler was killed pretty quick by us. Found a bird that put on a show for us. That tom gobbled up 3 different hunters. Though I was not able to get drawed back on him, my buddy was able to get him with the shotgun.

I was hunting LBL back in the late 70's, early 80's, back when it was a open hunt. I went today, mainly just because l love hunting there. NEVER, have l seen this many people. Heard one bird gobble one time, 2 miles away, one shot. Back in the day it was nothing to hear 8-10 a morning. Weather wasnt good at daylite, but still thought ld hear a few. Covered sev miles, never cut any sign. Just not sure about population now at LBL.

Heard 1 shot and 1 gobble at 3PM. Walked at least 8 miles and found very little Turkey sign. Sporadic hog sign throughout. I'd guesstimate a couple hundred hunters. Every gate with fields behind it had 2-4 trucks.

They were pretty much just not gobbling today. From what I heard.

The one you participated in was one of 13 checked in so far on nearly 100,000 acres with a few hundred people hunting. Congrats. But you're REALLY into giving them a chance hunting with a bow on you first trip to LBL.

Actually you have only 60,000 ac in TN. After removing the safety zones and other off limits areas you probably have maybe 50,000 acres of hunting land.

The trick to hunting LBL is to get away from the roads. Most of the googans hunt from their truck. Drive and stop every quarter mile, stick a call out the window of the truck and call. If they don't hear anything it is off to the next field or wide spot. You must get out of hearing range of the road.

The birds there are not easy but they aren't super birds either.
