Monday I got on the first gobbler this entire season that was roost gobbling. And gobbling great at that! He hit the ground and shut up with his hens, but then his hens came to 50 yards and turned away 90 degrees and headed off. Big boy was right behind on the same path, and I clucked twice at him and he broke off and headed right for me. First time I've EVER called a tom off hens. Heart pounding, he gets to 30 yards and I'm about to choke on my call from hyperventilating, so I spit it out into my facemask. Shot the tom, went to him, and realized I've now lost my call in the woods as it fell out of my facemask.... that's the real heart stopping moment for me.... I'm not particular on which call I use, but this same call is now responsible for 17 toms dying, and I was going to see how many more I could kill with it. It took me 30 minutes digging through the leaves for a $4 call, but I finally found it! Covered in dirt, but I washed it, and it cleaned up nicely. Still have a tag that needs punching in MS before I come back to TN.
