It varies from hen to hen, some of the most mature hens will begin the process now, if they haven't already, while some of the young Jennie's won't start for several weeks if not a month from now. It also can vary dramatically from region to region.
They should start laying eggs any time ,but as far as nesting ,and leaving the gobblers it is still 10 to 14 days away. Maybe more....
Hens lay a clutch of 10 to 12 eggs during a two-week period, usually laying one egg per day. She will incubate her eggs for about 28 days, occasionally turning and rearranging them until they are ready to hatch.
As I was walking back to the truck today at 7:45, I spotted 4 hens in the pasture I had been hunting. I watched them with my binoculars and they split up and went 4 different directions. They weren't with the gobbler I had been hearing earlier this morning, at least not when I saw them. I'd say they're well into nesting already.
I'll just be glad when gobbling picks up. Watched a gobbler the other afternoon for 2 hours with a couple hens. Only way I figured out where he went was when he finally gobbled....in the tree
just started mating on my farms... nest initiation will start in another week for the mature hens. Some jennies will nest this year, but the majority will not.
My 3 backyard jennies are all laying (hatched 5/14)... but they were spent the first 4 months of life on 30% game-bird starter feed, so they've matured quite a bit faster than normal.
