Ive been hunting with a bow for about 10 years now.My bow is about 5 years old, nothing wrong with it I guess, but like guns, would love to get a new one.I have no idea what makes one bow worth $299,or $499 or $699.Any ideas?I know everyone is high on Mathews, but what makes it worth so much?

I just went through the same thing I have shot Mathews for years and decided to try out some of the new bows and had my mind made up that I was not going to by a Mathews just for the sake of buying a Mathews so I proceeded to try alot of different bows, nothing felt right so as a last resort I picked up a Mathews DXT and it instantly with one shot reminded me why I shoot Mathews. My advice is to try a lot of different bows and buy what fits you it maybe 299 or 999 but weigh in how mush you use it and how long you will have it make sure you are happy with what you decide not what someone else is shooting!

Well they have to pay for all that nice fancy advertising. Then there is reseach, development and paying the way for all the elitist, I mean professionals, that they sponsor. They definitely have the best "advertising" out there IMO.

good point

I shoot a Mathews but only because it was the one that made me go "wow" when I shot it. A guy at EWA asked the same question about bows. Teresa wisely said that he should shoot them and see if there was a difference to him. There was. To some there may not be a real difference. Lots of good bows out there. Shoot until you find the one that makes you go "wow".

In my opinion there is some extra engineering cost in upper end bows because they do shoot better. The manufacturing cost should not be that much more. Now the big part of the extra cost of the high price bows imo is because they are the ones they give to all the tv hunting guys and pro shooters. Every year a new model comes out they give new bows to all the shooters and even pay some to shoot them from what I'm told. Plus they always advertise the upper end bows. So the upper end bows have to pay for the advertising and the freebies. It is also hard for one company that doesn't advertise much to convince people that their $499 bow is as good as a competitors highly advertised $699 bow.

true story. i was there. he bought the mathews.

Just as a point of information ... yes, Mathews does have a lot of $$ tied up in advertising, but they don't have/pay sales reps in the field like many of the other bow companies. It always aggravated me when we had a "sales rep" getting commission who was in no way responsible for us buying/stocking a specific line, but because we were in his "territory" he would still get a cut!

I think Mathews figured out they they'd be better off getting the word out to the end user of the product.

After deer season we will go and shoot several bows and find you one that works best. I plan on shooting a few as well. I may even break down and buy one myself this year..maybe.

Very good question. It's a combination of small things that make a high end bow worth the high end price. A couple of things to look for. Take a high end bow ($700+) and draw it. At full draw, look at how the string tracks off the top cam. It should look as if the string is directly in line with the cam. Do the same with a lower end bow, and you'll see that the string tends to track off the side of the cam. A string that tracks straight means your center shot can be set correctly, and it will always be more accurate. Also as you draw the bow, watch the string to see how much rotation it has. If it rotates more than 1/8 turn, it's poor quality and the other aspects of the bow will probably be similar. Enjoy the search...that's the fun part!
