So I got permission from the "boss" to get a new depthfinder for the boat. I have a smaller Garmin on the front of the boat and mounted the new Striker back on the console. Anyway, it has a really cool feature called "Echomap" it basically lets you map the bottom of the lake!

are the different shades supposed to indicate what is on the bottom? hardness vs softness of bottom?

there are 2 color schemes. one is a survey quality scheme that indicates the quality of gps and speed when you are charting. the other is depth contour color coding. its kind of a quick glance contour shading in different colors for specific depth ranges.

also keep in mind quick draw can be operated at a 25mph boat speed but not over 32mph. also there is a QDC community to share maps with other members.

Well even my wife got into "mapping" the lake tonight. We found a decent spot on the map and caught an 8 lb 3 ounce blue cat. We probably could have caught more, but we were both tired. She had a couple of runs on her "clicker" but she didn't hear them until it was too late. Regardless, the Echomap thing is really cool.

We found the best mapping is done at or around 10 mph. It isn't as accurate when you are going fast, but it is still very good.

You can also customize your map colors for certain depths. For example for depths between 30 and 40 feet, mine is purple. Once the depth is over 40 it is dark blue.

Nice catfish. Plus I made a new map of the channel.
