Just got my new Cabelas turkey catolog in the mail. Noticed these new 3rd Degree shells, looks interesting. Says 3 stage payload for "any" range. Says composed of #6 flitestopper pellets in the first stage to spread out evenly for inside 20 yard shots. Next stage is copper plated 5's to cover from 20 to 40 yds. Then a final stage of Heavyweight #7's for beyond 40 yards. From my experience Federal shells with the exception of the flight control wad shell are usually pretty decent. I've had good results with the old blue and gold box, the Turkey Thug lead shells, and the Heavyweights. I'm a nut for tinkering with turkey loads and chokes, so I'm sure I'll pattern them just to see. May be their competition to the Longbeard XR's, about the same price.

Ga. Lgth. Oz. Shot size Price

12 3" 1 3/4 5,6,7 $17.99

12 3 1/2" 2 5,6,7 $20.99

The reviews I've seen on those shells are decent. As far as pricing being similar to the longbeard xr, the federals are for a box of 5, not 10.

IMO it is a major waste of money. You are getting 5 shells for the price of Hevi Shot except you are getting mostly lead shot in it. Its just a dumb concept to me and great marketing...If it was between that and the winchesters id go with the winchesters. If i wanted to spend $22 for 5 shells id just get hevi shot.

Agree 100% with REN and would add...do they think we're just plain idiots? Great concept: give them less, charge them more, but put it in sexy packaging and give it a snazzy name.

Agree. They can keep em for that price.

I think it is a good idea, but doesn't pattern as well as other shells.

I just saw the other day, in cabelas, bass pro, or some other magazine about a new heavy load.
Correct me if im wrong, but it was hevi-shot with #6s backed by #2 steel shot.
Have yall seen this?

This is crazy!!! I don't know if it's safe to shoot steel thru a turkey choke....

You would think they wouldn't put steel in a turkey load. Got this quote from Hevi's site.
HEVI-Metal® Turkey combines steel shot with revolutionary HEVI-Shot® pellets into a layered shot shell. The result? More clean kills, less recoil than our standard turkey loads, and easier on the wallet.

I will not be buying any of the heavy metal turkey.
mag blends or longbeards for me.

Btw, I wish Remington still owned and made hevi-shot. Those green shells were the best ever, besides nitros of course.

Those shells had my first "long" kill years ago. Broke the 50 yard barrier with one

Steel shot in a turkey load is just a stupid idea. If you duck hunt you know how crappy steel is at killing birds compared to lead. I get it if you have no choice as some public areas have outlawed lead, in that case I would just pony up the $ for hevi shot

Surprise of all surprises...Federals 3rd Degree shells are going on sale left and right. Cabelas now has them for $15.99 (they were $22 several weeks ago). They're probably still way overpriced and I imagine they'll be in the clearance basket right along with VHS tapes of Monster Truck Madness and the MAD Smoky Baby.

Just passing along the info in case somebody has a gun/choke that likes'em.
