Here goes. My granpa gave me his old recurve 5 years ago. Cougar I believe but dont hold me to that. 55-60 lbs. not sure. I replace the string bc I knew it was the original. I shot it maybe 100 times. Not proficient enought for me to try to kill a deer. wouldnt bee ethical. But my question is...when I shoot my carbon arrows out of it fletched with 3 blazers. they kick like crazy. What am I doing wrong or need to change. Im gonna shoot it alot here coming up and try to take a deer with it next season.

What kind of rest does it have? If it's an elevated rest, the blazers might work, but shooting off a hair rest glued to the shelf you almost have to have feathers instead of plastic vanes to get a good launch.

Ok thanks. It just has the felt glued to the wood, also it needs to be re felted so how hard would that be and wut would you reccomend using.

Feather fletching will help those vanes will kick. Your carbon arrows are probably wayyyy too stiff. See if you can find some with a lighter spine and use a heavier head.

NEWBIE....I like to see all the newbies get'n on the trad band wagon, good stuff, this thread is start'n to grow.

Thanks for all the info fellas. Any tips on shooting the recurves?

bunch of tips. let's break it down into sections so we dont overload your brain too much at once. where do you want to start? Arrows? shooting? etc?

Arrows, I reckon lol he gave me some woods arrows with it but everyone said to make sure and not shoot them. Said they are bad for breaking and finding your forearm. So what arrow would be good, its a ben pearson cougar, 28" draw and im guessing 40 lbs. it say 40 xx. i assume that was poundage.

Take those wood arras and flex them in your hand. Not too hard but flex them. If they don't snap they are good. All i shoot is wood. Never broke one yet coming out of a bow even old ones. you will break them stump shooting.

they are still making wood arrows to shoot out of trad bows. like Charlie said, flex them. rotate 1/3rd turn, flex again, rotate, flex. if there are any cracks, you will hear and feel them. check the nocks for cracks, maybe even replace them if they are real old.
Charlie also knows a guy that makes nice wood arrows during the off season.

I would also suggest rolling wood arrows on a flat surface to make sure they are straight. You will see them wooble if they are crooked. Crooked wood arrows can be a source of extreme frustration.

Would it be best to shoot wood arrows or could I still shoot carbon accurately?

carbons are tricky. most shooters will need heavier weight head to get the spine weak enough to fly correctly. I am using 175 gr heads with my 500 spine arrows. this does 2 things for me. weakens the stiff spine for the arrow to flex around the riser and gets my arrow weight up.
the shelf cut on the riser has a lot to do with how well and how easy it will be to get a carbon to fly. closer to center, the easier. this is a trial and error situation. you will want to start off with full length shafts. dont be too hasty in cutting them short.

i shoot 3 feathers, some times 4", sometimes 5". I dont notice any difference between them at hunting ranges but on the longer ranges at the target range the 5 has more drag at the long shots. I've also noticed that if I shooting good that day, it doesnt matter too much if I shoot chocolate chip cookie feather out or in so most of the time all my feathers are the same color unless I am getting low on my bright colors then I will fletch with a dark chocolate chip cookie feather to stretch the bright colors out. I will normally make sure I'm shooting chocolate chip cookie feather out but if I got to get a arrow on the string quickly, I dont worry about it.
