My friend Rick Weber has an affection for fine antique English guns, and he uses them. This past week he took this buck with an original John Manton 17-gauge rifle. His accuracy load for this gun is a patched .648 ball ahead of 60gr 2fg Olde Eynsford black powder.... yes, I said 60 grains. The rest of the story is on the TWRA Facebook page.

As somebody that has only shot my dads muzzleloader a few times when I was a kid, is 60 grains a lot?

That's a very mild load for a 65-caliber rifle and ball. For deer hunting I use 82 grains in my 58 which I would call moderate at best. Just shows what kind of momentum a big old round ball has to punch all the way through a deer with that load.
